If i become pregnant how many calories should i be eating ? i'm currently overweight after overcoming an ED , i'm 5 foot 2 and 67 kg . I've started going to the gym everyday and eating about 1200 calories . Is this safe to do while pregnant ? Is it okay to use the gym and to diet ? It's my first time and i've no idea

Have you spoken to your midwife about this?? Seems like a BAD plan. The aim during pregnancy is generally NOT to lose weight but maybe minimise gain instead. Slimming world do a programme that supports pregnant women.

Please please speak to a health professional before you do anything like this.

You've said that you've just overcome an ED. I'd try to take focus completely off the number on the scales and focus on health. Dieting during pregnancy may lead you to relapse and pregnancy is not the time for that.

Even overweight people are expected to gain a little weight during pregnancy (it'll be the weight of the baby, placenta, extra fluids, etc).

By all means, exercise sensibly, but try not to be too restrictive in your good intake. Aim to eat nutritious foods- fruit, veg, protein and wholegrains.

If you are really worried, ask to be referred to a dietician and speak to your midwife/GP about your concerns

I'm overweight too (BMI 27) and in early pregnancy so my plan is to try to minimise any weight gain by focusing on healthy choices where I can - 3 balanced meals a day but with some limited "treats" so I'm less tempted to binge (a small choc bar, some low fat crisps etc).

I've read that overweight pregnant women should not try to lose weight but rather not to put on any more in the first trimester if you can. But some slow baby weight gain is inevitable as you progress into the third trimester - although I think a pregnant woman only needs about an extra 200 calories at that time, so it's not as much as I'd thought (no "eating for two", sadly Grin).

As for exercise, again I've read you shouldn't be starting any "new" exercises (because like dieting it can put stress on the body and therefore baby). But if you went to to the gym before pregnancy then it should be okay to continue if you are comfortable and not straining/lifting weights/getting very out of breath. Generally they suggest things like regular walking, swimming, pregnancy yoga etc - basically gentle exercises for most, unless you were very active pre-pregnancy.
