ECTOPIC Pregnancy - sister in theatre - got question......

My sister phoned me on Tuesday in a state saying she was pregnant even though she was sterlized in Sept (clips on tubes). Gone through a rush of emotion in that time but had blood test and scan yesterday and was told very high chance of ectopic pregnancy. Was due to have 2nd blood test and scan tomorrow to see how the hormone levels were doing etc. but was told that if she got pain in either side in the meantime, to come straight back. I questioned her about pain in shoulder and she said they never mentioned this. I said she MUST make sure she's seen if she gets this as I know a bit from Mumsnet. Well thank god for that. She started with pain this morning but not too bad and carried on work etc. and then rang me in a lot more pain and I demanded she went to the hospital. The reason she didn't go earlier is because it wasn't too bad plus the hospital hadn't mentioned it. Anyway, she went in early evening and her dp calle me about an hour ago to say she went into theatre at 9.15pm to have both tubes removed.

I just wondered if anyone had any idea how long the operation SHOULD last and also, what the recovery is like after? I'm sat here waiting for a call once she's out but not heard anything yet (although aware dp may be waiting til she's out of recovery etc).

TIA

I had an ectopic a few years ago & had one ovary and tube removed. Think I was only in theatre for half to one hur.

Recovery - was back at work 2 days later, though it was hard to stand up straight (keyhole surgery). completely back to normal after a week.

I posted on your other thread Looney - in case you thought you were being ignored!

i think two days is a bit soon to be back at work [ shock] but the hospital will tell her. She will be sore on both sides, as well as recovering from the anaesthetic. And the shock of course

Thanks a lot. Just feel sick waiting but I know I'll know when her partner calls!! Doesn't help that I'm pregnant myself so full of hormones so worry even more!

Agree, very shocked at the 2 days thing - think it's longer for a lot of people and of course she will have had both removed.

Right, I'm off to bed to wait for the phone.

Thanks for answering

any news???

LOONEYplayingachristmasTUNEy · 30/11/2007 08:28

We was in til 12ish, her dp called at 1.05am when she'd gone to sleep. She's come out with oxygen tubes through nose, fluid tubes, blood tubes etc - is that normal? I know she was operated on for nearly 3 hours. Anyway, going to call later on.

Glad the surgery is over now, and hope she makes a speedy recovery. I prob. should have taken a bit more time off but had a trial 2 days after the surgery (northern work ethic emoticon)

Well hers must be more complicated due to all the clips she had on etc - she's been told she'll be very lucky if she's even out of hospital by the end of the weekend! Glad yours was ok though

Hi looney
Glad to hear your sister is ok. I had an ep a few years ago and had 1 tube removed via a laparotomy where they open you up as opposed to keyhole surgery. I was in surgery for about 1.5 hours and came out with oxygen and iv drips so that all sounds normal. she may have lost alot of blood hence the transfusion, i wouldn't worry about that too much either.
recovery wise i was groggy for about 12 hours, very sore for about 48 and home on bed rest 3 days after the op. it took me about a week to be comfortably up and about and another week til i really felt myself again.
when shes home tell her she really must rest, i tried to get up too early and set myself back a bit. also tell her to try and keep her knees together when rolling over, standing up/sitting down, or getting in and out of the car as this avoids stretching her tummy muscles.
all the best for a speedy recovery for her

Thanks do much, I feel I know a bit more form what you've just said I'll pass the advice on. My worry is that she has 2 kids and is sharing care with her H and he lives half hour away. I need to talk to her about what help she can get as she's on her own where she lives, away from us all

Thanks again xx

Well she's actually hoping to go home tonight but has to go back next week because...........no sign of baby in tubes therefore very possible she's still pregnant and if she is, they need to terminate otherwise she'll bleed to death later on if she continues!!
