Thoughts on this?

I have opted for it but now I'm having second thoughts as I've had a scan, seen the baby and it's now put concerns in my head

Pregnant with my 2nd child, I'm 40

I had one and it really was fine. The not knowing was going to eat away at me and I researched the risks quite a bit and felt comfortable that it was low enough for me. I am 31. I think it depends on whether you’d treat the pregnancy any differently if anything was wrong?

Mintjulia · 15/08/2021 00:17

I had one and it was fine too.

Anordinarymum · 15/08/2021 00:26

Nobody can tell you what to do. It's your baby, your decision. There is no right or wrong and it is a hard call for any mum to make.

I decided not to go down that road. I said 'no' and put it out of my mind. Luckily for me everything was fine

I did talk to my gynaecologist about it and he fully supported me.
I had a history of not being able to conceive/failed IVF and then an ectopic pregnancy. It took eleven years before I conceived naturally and was offered amnio with each pregnancy (3)
I just thought all those years and all that angst and going down that route was wrong for me. But that was just me.....

Thank you

Reassuring to hear people who have had it with no issues

Need to discuss my concerns / thoughts with my partner as it's only today I've been thinking about it

Have you considered doing nipt first?

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 15/08/2021 19:05

Yes everyone can have NIPT now if your initial screening was on or after 01/07/21. I also found that the midwives in my area hadn’t been told this though!

Liverbird77 · 15/08/2021 19:09

I did not with both of my post 40 pregnancies. Never had an amnio, never had a nuchal fold test.

Liverbird77 · 15/08/2021 19:09

*NIPT not "not"

imaginethemdragons · 15/08/2021 19:12

I had one.
I was 42, had multiple miscarriages theory was that they were due to chromosomal issues.
Never investigated or proven though.
I was given a 1:100 chance of miscarriage due to the amnio. Therefore the decision was massive, I was utterly trapped.

It was performed by 2 wonderful sonographers who were expert, brilliant and did it under ultrasound conditions.

It was all fine, absolutely fine, baby had no issues, no complications and my mind was put to rest completely.
In fact for the first time since conception, I felt able to sit back and enjoy my unbelievable good luck of a healthy pregnancy after 10 years of heartbreak!

Fkrkrodps · 15/08/2021 19:12

I had it due to a concerning 20 week scan. It was fine. I was dreading it but it was quick and straightforward.

Nc4post99 · 18/08/2021 10:10

My mother had 7 with me apparently and this was in the late 80s. She has 2 appointments, the first there were 5/6 attempts to insert the needle and get fluid and all failed, came back 2 weeks later and had it done successfully. She was 35 but had been on some serious medication at conception apparently 🤷‍♀️

redandwhite1 · 19/08/2021 20:26

Still undecided.... hoping on the day I can say no and they won't get funny!

Why don’t you opt to have a nipt test done initially and then go from there?

It’s not invasive, just a blood test. But far more accurate than the nhs screening tests. Then if that returned a high risk result you could then consider having the amino.

I’m 39 and skipped the nhs screening tests altogether as I knew, and was advised by my midwife that my result would come back as high risk regardless, due to my age. So I opted to pay privately for a nipt test. I had the results back in a week which showed 1:100,000 chance of any trisomies.

Had that come back as high risk I would have gone on to discuss next steps such as amino or cvs.

redandwhite1 · 20/08/2021 21:13

I might try and speak to the midwife before the app and mention this NIPP test as it's not been mentioned

NIPT!

GoodnightGrandma · 20/08/2021 21:19

I had one and it was fine. I don’t remember it hurting.

TokenGinger · 20/08/2021 23:03

We decided against it. A 1:100 chance of miscarriage was too much to risk, for us.

redandwhite1 · 03/09/2021 09:02

Had the NIPT instead, so much happier about it all now, just to wait on the results 😊

@redandwhite1 hi how did u do the nipt test , my midwife recommended that i have a CVS done due to first pregnancy having chromosome issues , (which I declined, I dont feel comfortable them taking a sample of the placenta as ive also had quite a few early miscarriages) I asked about the nipt test and she said I cant have it , can I ask if you were high or low risk or did they just agree to do nipt test for u,

redandwhite1 · 03/09/2021 22:52

@Mylittleangel12 I'm consultant lead so high risk due to having thyroid issues so now you've said that maybe that's why I was offered it?

I did google it and im sure I read everyone is entitled to it?
