Just a question about using vintage cots, my mum really wants me use use a family airloom that dates back to the 50s, the bars are further apart than recommended (9cm) and the metal bar for drop side sticks out abit at the top, she thinks it will be find because nothing ever happened to any babies in it but I dont want to use as it wouldnt be deemed safe now! She has said she is going to do it up now and try and make it safe but I dont see how unless she moves the bars or something. What do people think? I feel like its just another thing to worry about a a first time mum but shes being really pushy about it

Say “thanks very much” then continue with your own plans to buy a safe cot with a new mattress.

I really wouldn’t use it
Nothing might have happened to any other babies in it,but you’d never forgive yourself if something happened to your baby
Safety rules has changed a lot over the years
Could you tell her to keep it at hers for when she has baby overnight at hers-and then not send baby until they are in a bed?

Your baby,your rules

It's just not worth the risk is it

We use an old cot that was my partners when he was a baby, they stripped all the paint back, repainted it and got a new mattress.

I can't say the width of the bars have been an issue, but it does have a bar that runs horizontally which now he's more adventurous he stands up on and has actually managed to get over the top of the cot and fallen out.

It would be fine though initially and see how it goes when baby gets older.

I love that we have an old cot.

Also paint - could it be lead painted.

She can't sand it and chemical strippers on that amount of wood is dangerous and expensive.

Katy345678 · 13/08/2021 18:42

@Gingernaut apparently its already been stripped and sanded down for me when I was a baby lol

It's a lovely gesture but there is no way I would accept it!

It's a sweet idea but you'd never forgive yourself if something happened. Children were exposed to lots of dangerous things in the 50s/60s that we keep them away from today because we know better (asbestos, lead paint, driving without seat belts, smoking indoors, etc).I definitely wouldn't use it!
