Unexpected BFP today, drank up to 1000ml of vodka a day for the last 9 months.. Chances of FAS?

Cycle day 36 (I'm irregular, anywhere from 29 to 39+ is my cycle). An alarming thought entered my mind of pregnancy when I woke up with bad nausea and brown CM...the faint line came up in 2 minutes.
Still can't believe that at a time when I've become an unrecognizable alcoholic and ruined my body and health, when I have been drinking myself to death, eaten crap and gained 5-6 stone for the last 9 months do I actually get a BFP. (Ironically developed a problem after my only other BFP ended in miscarriage in 2018 ...I was in good health then)

So I've obviously thrown the vodka out and currently making a health plan.

If damage has already been done will any health changes improve the chances of counteracting the potential of FAS?

Is 3 weeks too early for damage or would the amount of a litre a day be more of a concern?

I’d go speak to your doc/ midwife asap as going cold turkey after that amount of time could also be damaging to your health.

I don’t think FAS would be an issue as you’ve just got your BFP today so really you probably ovulated about 15days ago… but any amount of alcohol you consume will do now

Snookie00 · 10/08/2021 16:47

So you’ve been drinking a litre bottle of vodka every day for months and you’re planning to just quit cold turkey? That is dangerous amount of drinking. I think you need to speak to a doctor ASAP. I don’t think anyone on line can tell you what the health/ pregnancy implications will be. Are you in a position to continue with the pregnancy if you’re heavily alcohol dependent and (I assume) not in a good place mentally?

pinkmoon18 · 10/08/2021 16:49

As pp this can be dangerous going cold turkey from drinking that much.
Ring your GP ASAP!

Blamelesscars · 10/08/2021 16:51

I think FAS is unlikely as the placenta won’t have formed yet and you’re so early but I’d speak to your midwife for some support with the cutting drinking out so suddenly.

Also just for some reassurance a friend of mine didn’t find out she was pregnant until she was about 5 months and she was a heavy party girl her baby was born fine and is a thriving beautiful little girl now

Starjammer · 10/08/2021 16:51

I think if you've been drinking a litre of vodka a day, you need help to stop as it seems v unlikely you will be able to stop cold turkey without some medical support. I wouldn't be too worried about FAS so early but I would be extremely worried about your own health and also the chances of you relapsing further down the line.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 10/08/2021 16:54

Yes regarding placenta not being up and running yet, get some help and support for yourself, sounds like you've been a really hard place. Best of luck Flowers

Alcohol withdrawal is one of the most dangerous withdrawals. The withdrawal process can cause death. People who try to go through withdrawal after becoming very heavy drinking alcoholics have died.

You must seek help. Right now. Today.

anotherday235 · 10/08/2021 16:55

Contact Gp and follow guidance. Congratulations I really hope this works out for you. X

Fiddliestofsticks · 10/08/2021 16:57

*that was meant to say, "try to go through withdrawal alone."

Howmanysleepsnow · 10/08/2021 16:59

Speak to your GP today. If you get any physical signs of withdrawal you will need medical support (medication) as if untreated this could put you and the baby at huge risk.
However, FAS is unlikely if you stop drinking now in a medically managed way.
Id also advise folic acid and probably b vitamins as these are likely to be depleted by your alcohol use. Buy folic acid and a pregnancy vitamin for now, and speak to your GP/ OOH urgently about cutting out alcohol. They could also do bloods to check vit B levels etc.

pinkflamingo21 · 10/08/2021 17:03

DO you have a partner than can help look after you

Lumpwoody · 10/08/2021 17:04

You need to go to the gp. A litre of vodka a day is an enormous amount and you’ll need a managed detox.

HeronLanyon · 10/08/2021 17:05

Good advice above op. Wanted to wish you well.

TokyoSushi · 10/08/2021 17:09

Yes agree that you need to speak to the GP today if possible, but certainly first thing tomorrow if not. Hopefully this is the start of a new beginning for you.

Hardchoices · 10/08/2021 17:15

You need prof help ASAP. Drinking that much vodka everyday is bound to give you withdrawal symptoms. Plus, are you actually sure you can give it up?

ripplestitchblank · 10/08/2021 17:49

I'm a student midwife. You need to seek medical attention asap. Withdrawing from alcohol so quickly can be incredibly dangerous. I think I'd be calling 111 to see what they advise.

People advising she speak to her midwife, she's only just got a positive test, she's not under a midwife yet. Also, midwives can't help with this, she needs to see a doctor.

Op, I'm wishing you the best of luck, sounds like you've had a really tough time. Call 111 x

ripplestitchblank · 10/08/2021 17:50

I'm advising 111 as GP's will be shutting for the day and she may need help this evening or overnight. OP if you feel 100% fine you can ring your GP first thing.

HeyGirlHeyBoy · 13/08/2021 08:50

Hope you got some help and information OP.

Decmama10 · 06/12/2021 06:13

When does the placenta take over

CurryandSnuggle · 06/12/2021 07:12

Anywhere from 8-14 weeks @Decmama10. I notice you’ve commented on a couple of these now, are you ok?
