... have not joned any antenatal classes, these questions would prob all be sorted then. so bear with me and my stupidity BuT

what do i actually need?

LO is due Feb. We will get most of our clothes from my SILs, both having/had little girls just before us. BUT, I've a day off work and i'm ebay surfing and confess i've got an itchy spening finger!

So --- does this sound right for a Feb-born:

6 x vest. Dumb Question #1 - the baby wears vests under her other clothes, right? i didnt realise this til my SIL told me last week. does that mean that long sleeved and wrap over, slightly fussier ones still count as vests? or are those body suits a bit different somehow and then should be worn with a little vest underneath?

6 x romper suits. i love these and confess i have bought 3 or 4 already. i'd kind of assume she'd live in these for first few months. so these go on top of vess, right?

4 x sleepsuits. it seems like these are basically the same as rompers/all in ones. DQ #2 or am i missing something?? only differnce i can see is that some have built in socks/mitts. and they tend to be a bit fluffier and more likely to come in pastel shades!

I also have a couple of little trousers and t-shirts in 3-6m sizes that i have been bought.

1 x hat.

1 x pram suit//snow suit cause its going to be cold. seen a lot on ebay that are v nice plus cheap so may buy two - one NB size and one 0-3m.

3 x socks//booties. What do you think? my SIL says her LO never keeps these on. And i guess if the pram suit has built in socks then that'll keep her toes warm when outside??

1 x thicker//warmer indoor all in one thing or jumper.

what do you think????

anything obvs i've missed?

thank god you asked these questions - i had all these questions running around my head too despite having been to my bloomin antenatal classes

Orchide · 29/11/2007 16:49

I could have written this post, 6+ months ago!

would def agree that muslins are v v useful...goodness knows how much washing and clothes i saved from using them, specially now we have started weaning.

my sleepsuit/ vest rule is at least one for every day of the week, then i don't have to do as much washing....in theory!!

next do babygros with built in scratch mitts - much better than seperate ines, which were forever falling off my DD.

have you got a little jacket/coat for those days when it is milder or you may not need tthe snowsuit?

alexpolismum · 29/11/2007 20:36

If I were you, I wouldn't buy anything in the newborn size. Get a few 0-3 and wait till baby arrives. It doesn't matter if the clothes are little on the large size, baby will soon grow into them, but there's not much you can do if they're too small. Mine wore newborn size for less than 2 weeks and 0-3 size for just the first month. (He was 3.8 kg at birth and grew really quickly for the first four months)

tyaca, how exciting!!
I will vouch for Gap socks too, sounds ridiculous but I must have lost hundreds of other socks, Gap really is the only one I ever found that stayed on!
I LOVE the GreenBaby sleeping gear. I have 2 already and we got about 2 or 3 nightdresses handed down from my SIL which were similar but you had a drawstring that you tied at the bottom. I honestly used to wear and wash and they were invaluable for the middle of the night changes. I cannot tell you how much of a pain it is getting a newborn out of the romper suit thingy in the middle of the night.
I also LOVE the snuggle sac thingy.
I'm 16 weeks pregnant and have just added both of these websites to my favourites to buy a bit further down the line or pass on when someone asks what I need.
Enjoy the spending, it is lovely buying for a little future bundle!

guys.... ty, such great responses.

to do a cheeky summary:

vests and babygros are way forward for first few months

gap socks stay on

a pramsuit is the other necessity

add a blanket to my list

other misc things (not necessary):

wooly cardy or jumper useful too

drawstring nightie type thing for sleep

bug-in-a-rug --- think it looks too cute to bypass anyway! will add to xmas list.

..... and buy bigger stuff, not newborn. (DH is always on at for this. i am banned from buying anything smaller than 6m+ and all i have in smaller sizes are 3 vests and 3 rompers!)

just one very dumb questions

does the baby always have to wear a vest under a babygro/// romper/// sleepsuit?

is that like some rule i didnt know about? my SIL said it to me (she's due in 3wks), but she has quite a lot of skirts and dresses, while i am very much in the romper camp.

and finally.... ty to lipsy for tip off re asking for the boring stuff from people. its a good idea. when people tell you not to buy baby clothes ... "cause you'll get loads", it does assume you're buying them in advance for the LO's wellbeing, rather than for your own selfish gratification!!

i mulled over the vest/no vest thing for some time. Came ot the conclusion that the answer was mostly! I used to frett over....was a vest gonna make her too warm and overheat! In the summer DD sometimes didnt, although more than once wed set off somewhere abnd find that actually the weather wasnt as nice as i thought when looking a=out of hte window. Have returned home before now in order to redress - her not me!

In case you are interested...i have a small mountain of little wooly cardis knitted by my MIL. My DD has grown quicker than nanny can knit so many are unworn, mainly in white, also a couple of lemon and lilac one.

bruhaha · 29/11/2007 22:49

these are good for in car seats - much better than trying to squeeze them into the seat in a snow/pram suit. www.cuddleup.co.uk I got one the other day and by lo looks sooo cute - and it's easy to put on.

NoviceKnitter · 29/11/2007 23:03

I'd say yes to vest in feb. in summer dd sometimes ONLY wore a vest. play it by ear and trust your instincts. remember they can lose heat fast first few days but then you can dress them in similar amount of layers to you, and it's better to err away from overheating - but I'd say that was on the outer layers rather than skipping the vest. just my opinion tho. Good luck! ps if you buy grobags to sleep in it comes with thermometer and tells you what to dress baby in depending on temp!

lispy · 29/11/2007 23:35

HI, I saw the little dresses from Bonds here in Australia. Super cheap and saves trying to do up those bloody poppers in the dark while not waking the baby! THe draw string ones are a lot more expensive the brand is eeni meeni moh. Search on ebay eeni or bonds and see what comes up cause I don't know if you can get them over there. THey do show up from time to time.

Tangle · 30/11/2007 08:30

DD is now 8 months and I've never been into skirts or dresses - a newborn's legs are sooo short they never seemed to work, and by the time she was about 4 months she was so wriggly they'd just bunch round her waist all the time. I'm also not a fan of T-shirts and things that don't meet in the middle (pick up baby, clothes ride up...)

Dungarees are fab!

I'd try not to get too many things in in advnace - DD was 9lb 12, and has always erred on the large size, while a friends DD was about 5lb 7, is now 6 months and is still wearing some 0-3 month clothes. For basics it's not a problem, but if you get anything seasonal you may find it fits at totally the wrong time of year.

Anna8888 · 30/11/2007 09:06

Dresses are great for babies in hot climates - my sister had her daughter in late April when living in Spain and she had loads of gorgeous loose, sleeveless dresses with matching pants.

My daughter, born in November in England, didn't wear her first dress for a year, and even then it was only brought out for very special occasions.

lispy · 30/11/2007 11:04

Sorry to take you off track, I was replying to a previous post about those little dress things babies wear to bed not going out ones! Sorry!

LoveAngelGabriel · 30/11/2007 11:08

A few vests, babygrows and something warm for when you go out - anything else is just extra.

Don't buy too much 'newborn' stuff. Lots of babies have grown out of it before they're 3 months old.

Scratch mitts and booties - I dunno, I found these a waste of time, tbh.

Elfsmummy · 30/11/2007 11:18

When my DD was born everybody had told me not to buy anything as we'd receive too much.

However in reality we did get loads of beautiful clothes, each one with an accompanying note explaining how because we were going to get loads of stuff, they'd sent 3-6months!

The beauty of it was that as everyone has said they do live in babygros and vests for the first few months and all the lovely 3-6month clothes came into their own about 5 months later when she finally fit into them!
