Hi,

I'm currently approaching my 12th week of pregnancy.
This weekend has been the worst Iv ever felt in my life.
I went 4 days without a meal (I tried to eat) and then my stomach couldn't handle liquids.
I ended up in A&E as i was so weak.
I had 4 ketones found. After some anti sickness medication and fluids via a IV. They discharged me as my ketones went down.

I'm just so scared to end up like that again, the doctor said, as I'm approaching the second trimester things should improve.

Please tell me they do?

@laylaloox did they give you any medication to take home?

HG is awful, it really is such a hard illness to live with! It makes you so ill, emotional, weak, literally it’s just horrible, I feel for you I really really do!

With my first pregnancy I suffered all the way though, it was horrific, I was still being sick whilst I was giving birth :( it’s so tough!

I’m currently 11 weeks pregnant with my 2nd, the constant vomiting started at 5 weeks, started medication at about 7 weeks, the sickness is now under control with medication but I still feel so awful all of the time, I feel so sick, tired and dizzy literally 24/7 so still struggling to eat and drink as normal.

Hoping you get some relief soon! X

Bless you this was me. I’m 34 weeks now and have felt ‘normal’ and not needed daily constant meds since around 23 weeks. I was admitted at 14 weeks for the same as you 4+ ketones, the only thing that helped me was cyclizine and ondansetron one tablet of each first thing. Cyclizine at lunch time and then cyclizine and ondansetron at around 5pm that was my saviour. I would of had to end my much wanted pregnancy without them.

If you are taking any anti sickness please please keep on top of laxatives speaking from bitter experience. It WILL get better I promise. Get in touch with pregnancy sickness support charity they are great

Absolutely get in touch with pregnancy sickness support, they are brilliant.

Both times for me by about 22 weeks I had days where I was more functional. But it truly ended the very second I delivered the placenta, I suddenly felt normal. It feels like an impossibly long time away but it will come. I'm so sorry, it's shit, take all the help you can.

Big hand hold from my. HG is awful, my two pregnancies were truly the most miserable times of my life.

Lots of emotional, medical, practical and legal support here pregnancy sickness support

For me, it switched off completely in week 16. I woke up one morning and it was gone. It took a few days and a few meals to believe it!!

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 10/08/2021 20:35

I was only hospitalised once (after losing 25 lbs in 6 days) and was given motilium, omeprozole and buscapan over my pregnancy. They helped, I ended up with a fairly restricted diet as its what I could keep down, we joke that DD has red hair because I practically lived off of tomato soup. However, 12 years on I still can't stand the taste and smell of tomato pasta. The sickness did get better though and instead of it being several times a day it reduced to once or twice a week and completely stopped as soon as DD arrived.

HG is the worst and put me off ever wanting to be pregnant again, I have never, ever felt as ill as I did when I was in hospital being rehydrate.

StevieNix · 10/08/2021 20:49

Sorry your suffering op! HG is absolutely horrible, I had it from week 8 with my ds until week 28ish when it just magically disappeared over night. I was however sick throughout labour after the contractions started as well which might be something to be prepared for just incase.
It’s worth exploring anti- sickness tablets from your GP to take every day if you haven’t already, you may need to try a few different types to find what works for you, unfortunately the only ones that worked for me also practically knocked me out so weren’t ideal for me.

laylaloox · 10/08/2021 21:40

@Ttcbn2 yes I have been prescribed Cyclizine by the hospital. Was previously on metoclopramide from around 7 weeks, however didn't seem to work.

I'm feeling a lot better today managed to eat, finally Smile

When I delivered with both. I could feel the difference very quickly after giving birth, the last times I vomited was in labour.

I ended up being scheduled for iv fluids rather than them waiting till I was extremely ill after a few admissions, if it carries on ask for that as it really helped.

Flutterby8 · 10/08/2021 23:28

HG is absolutely awful.
Mine started at week 6 and I got to week 11 without meds but lost over a stone in the process and felt like complete death.
If I had been told by my midwife that it was abnormal I would have gone to my GP sooner for medication but I wasnt. I was simply told it was fine and I had the weight to lose!
I was given Prochloraperazine by my GP and it really helped.
Im week 23 now and im still taking meds. Some days are better than others. Im not actively vomiting but will feel nauseaus if I forget to take a tablet.
The first few weeks though were the worst weeks I think I have ever lived putting it in a dramatic way. I worked all the way through in an active job and I have zero idea how I ever managed.

Hang in there, it does get better!

haidri · 11/08/2021 00:07

I'm currently 14 weeks & it has been two days since I've been weaning myself off anti sickness tablets.

First trimester till 13 weeks were extremely severe HG to the extent I was admitted in hospital for high ketones & losing 4kg. I've gone through three different anti sickness tablets, but finally at 14 weeks I'm starting to feel like my stomach is settling.

I do have the occasional nausea but touchwood this is the end of HG 😟

nonotmenotI · 11/08/2021 00:37

I had hg the whole way through pregnancy, labour and delivery. It was horrific. I really sympathise with anyone suffering from this.

Littletoaster2021 · 11/08/2021 11:53

Huge sympathy for you. You are probably at the peak of it, if that’s any comfort - what helped me, like others have said, is finding a medication combo that worked for me. Pregnancy Sickness Support saved me, I really don’t think I’d have coped without their support as my GP has been useless (and a bit mean too). I’m 33 weeks and was last sick at 28 weeks - but it became much less frequent after 20 weeks. Being very careful about food helps too, but that’s only really possible when you’re better than you are currently. I’m still nauseous but at what I imagine is a normal morning sickness level, not the horrific retching HG nausea.

Also want to add that HG recovery isn’t a straight line - I had good and bad days but overall it did gradually improve.

And finally, if anyone suggests ginger biscuits feel free to tell them to off Wink

Ilikechips · 11/08/2021 12:16

Also I found the GP took me much more seriously once I mentioned I was in touch with pregnancy sickness support.

GPs can be reluctant to prescribe ondansetron because it’s expensive but as soon as I mentioned pregnancy sickness support I had no troubles getting hold of it!
