Really worried about being rhesus negative… am I overreacting?

Hi all,

I’m 17 weeks pregnant to my first baby. I found out I was blood type rhesus negative a few weeks ago and I have just received the letter to say that my baby is rhesus positive and they recommend that I have anti-D injections at 28 weeks. It’s sent me into a bit of downward spiral this morning as I’ve been looking at lots of stuff online and am really worried about how this could affect the baby and any future babies I might try to have (I’ve always hoped to have more than one).

I’ve already been very anxious since finding out I was pregnant and this just feels really scary. I know I’m probably overreacting but I was just looking for some reassurance? Is anyone else rhesus negative with more than one child?

I think you need to calm down a bit. The anti d will help prevent future issues in other pregnancies. I have 2 children and am rh- and their dad is rh+. I had anti d during pregnancy and after the births with no issues

FreeBritnee · 06/08/2021 12:31

Just follow their directions and it will be fine. I did have secondary infertility and lots of miscarriages but I think that was solely my age and nothing to do with being rhesus negative.

stripedino · 06/08/2021 12:32

I am, negative with one, positive with the other! So anti-D needed in first and not second. Two healthy DC. Kindly I advise you stop Dr Google speak to your midwife/health visitor if concerned about anything in your pregnancy.

Geamhradh · 06/08/2021 12:33

I'm rh neg as are most members (female) of my family. My mum, aunt and gran. DD was positive. I had an amnio and some sort of injection afterwards, and after DD was born I had another one.
It's actually not as rare as I used to think.

Alltimeblow · 06/08/2021 12:36

I'm rh- and have two children, pregnant with my third. I had the anti-D during pregnancy and after birth with my first. Same again with my second but also had it a couple of times when I had random bouts of bleeding and once when I had a fall as a precaution. It really is nothing to worry about, you're fine as long as you have the injections. Just make sure and tell your midwife about any bleeding/falls as soon as they happen as you're supposed to get the injection within 72 hours I believe.

Jamjar77 · 06/08/2021 12:40

Same here, I’m rhesus negative, husband is positive and I had anti-D injections with both children. No issues whatsoever.

ShipshapeShore · 06/08/2021 12:42

I have two DC. You just need the injection and don't injure your bump (unlikely anyway!) This was one of the more minor health concerns in both my pregnancies and both babies were completely healthy Smile Try not to worry, it'll be fine.

ladygindiva · 06/08/2021 12:42

Echo pp really nothing to worry about. I'm negative and have had 3 dc with no issue. Considering it's rare I have met shed loads of women who also are and haven't heard of a single issue amongst them.

FTEngineerM · 06/08/2021 12:42

They give you the injection(a) so that there won’t be a problem. You’ll be fine.

RamblesShambles · 06/08/2021 12:50

It's honestly fine.. I've got 2 DC and I'm negative. No issues.

Whysotired · 06/08/2021 12:52

I’m negative and DS was positive. I had the injection at 30 weeks. All was absolutely fine. Try not to worry xx

curcurbita · 06/08/2021 12:55

As everyone else has said don't worry. About 17% of births in England and Wales are to rhesus negative women, it's really really common and they have been treating it for years. My MIL is Rh- and had four successful pregnancies.

Bancha · 06/08/2021 12:55

Fine for me too. I had a lot of bleeds in my first pregnancy and had to go and get anti d injections every time. It was inconvenient and time consuming but worth it to ensure I can carry a second baby safely. Just make sure you follow their advice, I’m sure you’ll be fine.

CosmicMonkey · 06/08/2021 13:00

I’m negative and DH positive. First DC is negative, second DC positive and currently 25 weeks pregnant with third. Had anti D injections in previous pregnancies and had to have one this time round at 18 weeks because our dog jumped right on top of bump while I was asleep but everything was fine and will get another anti d at 28 weeks as normal - as pp said it is quite common to be rhesus negative so please don’t worry too much

Burtknowsbest · 06/08/2021 13:04

I had 3 pregnancies before they treated you in pregnancy, just injections after birth - no issues!

Wolfiefan · 06/08/2021 13:13

I have two kids and I’m rh negative. Just had anti d as needed (including when I fell out the back door and landed on my bump!)
Speak to your midwife about the anxiety. You need to deal with that before the baby arrives.

RookieRoo · 06/08/2021 13:14

Just make sure you have the injections when advised and contact them if you have a bleed, as you should get another one within 72 hours, I believe.

I was worried like you, luckily baby was negative, too. But can understand your concern. Did have to have the anti D after one of my miscarriages, though.

Ohthereyouarepeter · 06/08/2021 13:17

I’m a Rh(D) -ve mum and also work in blood transfusion. Provided you take the anti-D injections when offered then you and your little one (future little ones) will be fine. I have yet to see anyone form an immune Anti-D (where future pregnancies would be high-risk) who had taken the injections, the success of the prophylactic Anti-D injection programme is not celebrated enough.
Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy OP.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 06/08/2021 13:17

I'm negative and have had anti D, maybe I'm super uninformed but I didn't realise it was something that you had to worry about. I'm actually glad I didn't know about Mumsnet when I was pregnant, their wouldn't have been time to worry about all the stuff I didn't know about Grin

Unless there really is a danger I didnt know about I'd guess you'll more than likely be fine

Sexnotgender · 06/08/2021 13:18

Please don’t worry. I’m rhesus negative and have had 3 successful uncomplicated pregnancies.

Em8725 · 06/08/2021 13:22

How did you find out your baby was Rhesus positive? I am rhesus negative and had to have the injections in both pregnancies. Both my children were rhesus negative at birth. They said as they couldn’t test them in utero and I didn’t know the blood group of DH, I had to have it anyway 😊 both pregnancies and babies were absolutely fine

Byheckythump · 06/08/2021 13:25

My Nan was rhesus neg and had 9 babies! I am the same and have had 2 healthy pregnancies with no issues. I had the anti jab but pretty sure my Nan never did. You need to relax and enjoy your pregnancy.

KohlaParasanda · 06/08/2021 13:25

I'm rhesus negative. Three of my children are rhesus positive. I had them at a time when anti-D wasn't routinely given during pregnancy, it was only given after a bleed or after birth once the baby's blood group had been checked from a cord blood sample. They were all fine. Finding out my children's blood groups when they were born was a bonus.

Don't let worrying about this spoil your enjoyment of pregnancy.

happytoday73 · 06/08/2021 13:27

I agree it's odd they know what your baby is... Your child's partner being positive doesn't guarantee baby is...as Rh+ is dominant the dad could be ++ or +- genetically... If second there is 50%chance baby is negative...
I'm Rh - as are all my kids despite dad being positive...
Where as I'm only Rh neg of my siblings... And the only one it matters too

Insert1x20p · 06/08/2021 13:29

The only issue for me is I had my DC in a country where rhesus negative is pretty much non-existent so they don't have much/any -ve blood on hand. I got some flown in specially for me (didn't need it fortunately but nice to know they had it covered).

Just get the shots and all will be fine.
