I am thinking of going to my mums for Xmas. We do it it every year and it is the highlight of the year for DD. Unfortunately, my mum is a 5 hours drive away! I am due January so would be Xmas is about 3 weeks before DD and would be nearly 38 when coming home. Question is, if I go into Labour, can I have the baby in a completely different hospital to where I live?

In the UK? Then yes, do you still have co-op cards?

HappyintheHills · 05/08/2021 21:49

30ish years ago we carried our vital notes on the card, just in case you ended up in the wrong hospital

FluffMagnet · 05/08/2021 21:53

Yes. My consultant says this happens quite frequently.

Hospital bag and notes in the car just in case.

We went away a few hours from home the weekend a few hours from home before 2nd DC's due date. First was 4 weeks early and I got bored sitting around expecting the 2nd to be early too. All was fine and went into labour on my due date.

I had a ds on 20th Jan. Xmas over 50 miles from home.
I drove back from Spain 20 days before dd arrived on her due date... Admittedly that was a bit close for comfort!!
Take your bag and notes just incase!!
Younger dd was due Xmas eve but stayed put until NYE!! Had Xmas at home that year as waaay to risky!!

Pack the hospital bag, notes, and infant carseat just in case. Biggest issue is comfort when travelling so heavily pregnant.

We have the same issue as due early January and DP’s mum lives four hours away. As others have said, the main thing is to make sure you’ve got your hospital notes and bag with you just in case.

The solution in our case seems to be that we are staying where we are and hosting Christmas this year. Not sure how up for that I’m going to be at 38 weeks but fortunately DP is pretty good and will take on most of the hosting responsibility - at least I hope!!

I had to travel 350 miles at 38weeks, to attend my granfathers funeral. Midwife told me to take hospital bag and notes with me. She also advised to plan route of travel, and know where on route the nearest hospitals were and what junctions you'd need to leave motorway at for each hospital. Once route was planned and printed, I actually felt really relaxed whole journey.

@Seasidemumma77 that's good advice thank you
