Pregnancy through IVF and covid jab

Afternoon

Little bit of background is me and my husband went through IVF to conceive our first child. After a long two years it has finally happened for us.

I’m now a healthy 21 weeks pregnant with my little one. We couldn’t be more exciting.

However all the way through I have been saying I won’t get the covid jab till after birth. With the recent increase in pregnant women being hospitalized, increase still birth and increase pre mature birth without having the covid jab. I’m now in 2 minds! I have read soo many blogs and articles now but not sure what to do. I guess I’m wanting some advice from people who been in our situation or is in our situation on their opinions.

I had my jab at 37 weeks with an IVF pregnancy. IVF pregnancies are no different to normal ones once you're past the first bit, so no need for additional concern there. There is no evidence the vaccine will cause your pregnancy or baby any issues but there is evidence Covid could affect you more severely in the third trimester. I deliberated for ages but am glad I've had it now. It's a personal decision and I can see both sides of the coin, but on balance wish I'd actually just got on and had it earlier as I could have had my second one by now!

Thank you very much for your advice. I am leaning towards getting it done.

This immunologist has the most up to date information on vaccines in pregnancy. Reading her findings is what persuaded me to get vaccinated:

So many known risks if you catch covid. Unless you want to self isolate at home until birth and beyond (it takes several weeks to build immunity after your first jab) then I would get jabbed asap

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 05/08/2021 20:53

Mine is a IVF pregnancy and I had my 2nd jab at 5 weeks (my first jab was pre- pregnancy). I'm only 7.5 weeks now but I have seen the heartbeat on the early scan, am measuring normally so far and had no fever or side effects from the jab (apart from the usual sore arm).

The IVF nurses and a GP both said to get it asap as Covid can be so dangerous in pregnancy for both mother and baby and they are apparently seeing increased cases. Since you are past your first trimester as well, I wouldn't even hesitate personally (since the effects of Covid are even riskier as you get into your third trimester).

I'm in the similar situation (pregnant though ivf) and handily have a SiL who's a gp. I asked her advice and she read up on it for me quite thoroughly and said there is no evidence of any negative side effects. She said the main reason for any recommendation on timing is that you may get a fever as a result of the jag which can be bad in first trimester so some places recommend waiting until 2nd trimester.

My husband is a teacher so I was conscious that I can take all the care I want and isolate myself quite well but he can't!

Another one here has my first jab at 37 weeks (with my age group, just as the guidance changed) and my second when DD was 5 weeks old. IVF with our last embryo. For me the decision was easy, but I had first hand knowledge of DH cousin having the jab back in April in USA where pregnant woman were always encouraged to have it.

All the best op x

Many thanks everyone for putting my mind at ease to get it done.

My IVF clinic advised me not to get the jab, but then based on further indications that it was safe advised me to get Moderna or Pfizer from 12 weeks onwards, that's what I've done.
Even if you want to be really cynical about IVF clinics as a business, they want to keep their success rates high so wouldn't want to give advice that could jeopardise that.

IVF pregnancy and under the care of a Fetal medicine consultant due to previous complications…

Both the clinic and consultant advised I had the jab after 12 weeks

Now double jabbed and no issues or side effects
Glad I had it done having seen the stats released last week

Hi
Just thought I'd add a note to say my wife has had her jab at week 24 and week 28 (currently at Week 30). This is our first IVF cycle, after five years off pregnancy losses and various surgeries. We spoke to our IVF consultant, and also to doctors who performed various surgeries on my wife in the past - all recommended she get the jabs. She had the Pfizer jab, with no side effects, just a sore arm for a day or two. We both work from home, but felt that it was the best thing to do, when considering the impact of getting COVID for a pregnant woman, it felt like the right thing to do. All the ladies in our NCT group have had their jabs, all at different stages in their pregnancies, again, no issues. Protect yourself and your precious cargo.
Best wishes to you and all the other strong women who go through hell throughout this process, us blokes really do have it easy.
Take care and good luck with your pregnancies. Smile

Really appreciate hearing all comments. It has made me feel a lot better. I have finally made the decision to book and have my first jab next week Smile

Ivf pregnancy here and like you I have been very against getting vaccinated but have decided to book as they are finally actually recommending it rather than offering it. I'm 14 weeks now so feel a little safer having past the first trimester. I have been mostly reassured by the fact I haven't seen any mumsnet posts of people saying something went wrong afterwards and I'm sure they would be there if it had happened! I have seen 2 where people had spotting but baby was fine 🙂

Lee8911 · 06/08/2021 09:20

Think it nice to hear such positive responses about getting the jab. It has been a massive assurance to hear sooo many women having with no effects

Also just want to say congratulations to all the IVF mums to be and generally mums to be. We have all had our journeys and hope that all you have a healthy pregnancy and baby!!
