Is swimming bad at first trimester?

Hello ladies!

I am wondering if swimming in a pool is ok.
I am 5 weeks pregnant, and I have a salt water pool.

I lost my first pregnancy at 5 weeks so I am really scared in this one. I am very very constipated and it is giving cramps, so I thought maybe some water exercises would help me.

I couldn't talk to my doctor yet, but i would like to know your thoughts.

Thanks in advance!

Swimming is absolutely fine - it is a gentle exercise that is suitable to be done throughout pregnancy. Just take it easy & do what you feel comfortable with, you might find just walking in the water or doing some gentle stretches in the water makes you feel better.

Don’t go in a jacuzzi / steam room / sauna these are not recommend for pregnant women.

Hope you feel better soon

I swam a lot in pregnancy. It's really the only exercise you can do safely, o yoga with the right instructor.

Try and get into an aqua natal class. It's not great exercise but I made good friends and I swam after my class

How is it the only exercise you can do safely?! What needless scaremongering.

Women are encouraged to continue their normal exercise as long as its comfortable.

Possibly not high contact violent sports (martial arts, rugby?) but everything else is fine.

Swimming is recommended by NHS.

Rubbish.

I swam a lot during pregnancy, I also cycled & did weight lifting 3 times a week through to 9 months.

The vast majority of exercise that you currently do can be continued in pregnancy if you feel up to it and under suitable supervision. I had pregnancy trained specialists and physios working with me to make sure I did what was best for me & baby.

As PP comments swimming is particularly good during pregnancy especially nearer the end as it gives you a period of weightlessness (although getting up the ladder can be challenging afterwards)

Have a look at the Active Pregnancy Foundation on Facebook or www.activepregnancyfoundation.org for guidance on keeping active throughout pregnancy

Definitely can go swimming, feels great with a bump later on. I caveat with if you feel any hip instability, don’t do breath-stroke kicks - I found this really aggravated my hips. Normal
Hip kicking (front / back crawl) did not seem to cause the same issue. Not even gonna comment on butterfly… but the mental picture of me pregnant doing a butterfly stroke has amused me

I swam loads when I was pregnant. I went each morning before work and swam a mile, decreasing to half a mile up until I was about 38 weeks.
