I have GD this pregnancy and like others have said if you get it, it’s just one of those things.
I was diagnosed following a routine glucose test at 28 weeks. This is baby number 4 and the only time I’ve had it. They test me because my dad is type 2 diabetic, but until this pregnancy I’ve never had it.
I have been able to control it largely with altering my diet, but unfortunately my fasting overnight levels (which can’t be controlled through diet and are purely hormonal/placenta related) have been creeping up.
I test my levels 4 times a day using a finger prick testing kit.
I’m now on metformin and injecting insulin at night which isn’t fun but hopefully it’s only short term.
I can say though that the care I’ve had from the GDM team at the hospital has been exceptional. They are always at the end of the phone if I have any questions, they monitor my levels through the app on my phone that I upload my readings to each day, and using that they’ll contact me if they spot anything worrying.
I’ve seen a dietician, specialist nurses, a consultant, and due to have my first growth scan next week (I’m now 34 weeks).
I was scheduled for an elective section anyway due to having had 3 sections previously, and this was going to be done at 39 weeks. The only difference now is that because I’m on metformin and insulin they may decide to bring the section forward a week to 38 weeks.
It’s not ideal and is one more thing to worry about, but it’s far more important to get a diagnosis so that it can be managed.
Good luck
