Hello,

Whilst in hospital with a tiny bleed and what ended up being a nasty urine infection they took a swab and i got a letter advising i have strep b along with a very big booklet

Im just wondering if anyone else has had this and how did it affect you? I am having a c section so according to the booklet i wont get antibiotics as il already have them for that procedure.

Endless googling has been done but would be nice to hear from people with similar experiences, obviously when reading the book all the bad bits stood out the most.

Im currently 19+3 :)

I had strep b. I had antibiotics during labour and then monitored for 12 hours after. All was fine Smile

I had it too but only found out when I went in after my waters broke.
I wasn’t allowed the water birth I wanted. I ended up having a section and antibiotics afterwards. Baby also had to have IV antibiotics as a precaution until her blood work came back (had to have a little cannula in her tiny hand 😭). That was almost 7 years ago now though and I don’t know if they do that now, they didn’t when I had my twins 3 years later 🤷‍♀️

Try not to worry. It’s much better that they know. My friend didn’t know and her DS ended up in hospital for 5 weeks with sepsis caused by Strep B.

I tested positive for strep B with all 3 of mine - number 1 and 2 needed IV antibiotics after they were born (number 1 showed signs of infection although was ultimately fine. Number 2 was quick so hadn’t had antibiotics in labour). Number 3 was born completely membranes intact so they treated him as a c-section even though he wasn’t because no part of his body actually touched the birth canal as he was born.

I agree. Much better that they know than that they don’t know. Flowers

@Tiredforfive45 This is baby no2 for me, first time around we both nearly died - well my little man had to be resuscitated and was overall a very terrible and horrible expierence, i had my appointment with my consultant this time around and was a bit calmer that they have all my notes ect then i got that news i was like great something else to worry about now! But as you say best they know now,

@Cric thats great to hear, hopefully the same for me

Hi,

I had a swab to check for thrush/BV about 5 weeks ago and it came back that I was positive for Strep B.

I was terrified at first but my midwife and GP really helped to put my mind at ease. They said it's common and most people will never know they have it. Like others have said, it's better to know about it than not.

I am having a C section so as long as don't go into natural labour before then (like I did with DD 2 days before her c section date!) then I apparently won't need extra antibiotics during labour.

It's not a pleasant thing to be told, it doesn't sound particularly nice to be told you are strep B positive but after much worrying myself, I have come to the conclusion it is one of those things and they will look after us now!

I have strep B also and was barely surprised as I tend to have every infection going. I never gave it much thought but obviously am a bit nervous about passing it onto baby. The midwife didn’t seem to think it was a big deal and even said I could still have a water birth if I want.

I'm not as far along as you but got diagnosed with strep b after having a swab to find out cause of bleeding. My SIL never knew she had it and my nephew was poorly after the birth, so as previously said, it is good that we know and it can be treated (although not needed with section)
