I've heard it can happen but thought it was a viscious rumour.

I seem to have developed them overnight and I'm very uncomfortable. Anything I can do?

Please tell me they will go away once the baby has arrived.

Presume you mean vulval varicocities.
Mine went when the baby arrived but are back this time with a vengence, feel and look like a bad John Wayne impression. Also didn't effect my labour. Last time more substantial pants were enough. Phoned my midwife in desperation last week and she suggested ice packs (keep meaning to get some of those Femme pad things to try) and to try maternity support tights. I didn't hold out much hope for the tights but have been amazed by the difference they have made & I feel so much more human again. I hate tights and find them itchy but it's a small price to pay for not having the undercarriage hanging off. Have my eye on some Spanx Mama body support for when these aren't enough.
Having shown DH what I was making all the fuss about, I feel the future vasectomy may no longer be required as he may never feel like venturing there again.

have heard of poeple wearing sanitary pads for extra support but I found that worse as I hate them, or cycling shorts!! but my arse is big enough now without wanting to draw any more attention to it.
Hope you get some reliefsoon, it's pretty miserable.

hello Connor,

I developed these too in my second preg(ds2 now 9wks) and to say i was mortified was an understatement. Had nothing like this with ist preg. Developed them at about 30wks. wAS feeling really heavy between the legs and at first thought it was pressure from baby, but thought 'no, too early'. Got a mirror to have a look and couldnt believe it. I looked generally swollen and fat vein on the left side. Wasnt too worried about delivery as was no where near, just worried wouldnt go back to normal. sPENT the next few wks obsessively looking with a magnifying mirror and looking on mumsnet(this was when i first found this greatsite whils searching for vulval veins!!)

Anyway, mine werent so uncomfortable to need anything for pain, just felt heavy. Rest with feet up and try one of those cooling femepads for relief(a friend from work confessed to having same problem and she used them). Vitually straight after giving birth(think was same night!)i had alook and vein had virtualy gone, only slightly visible, not really sticking out and by day or two was completely back to normal. So be reassured!

Will give the tights a try. Am VERY uncomfortable at the mo so willing to do anything.

God I'm in a foul mood today anyway and this isn't helping!!

i had this. bloody uncomfortable! tried ice packs but they did nothing.

i found what worked the best was to spend 5 mins (need somewhere private) and give it a massage. just kept pushing it in, towards body. this gets the blood circulating again. i found this gave really good relief.

yes it goes away after birth.

I had a varicose vein on my fanny too! (It is a pg secret I do not share with many!)

It went very soon after both pregnancies.

I didn't find much helped, although trying to elevate the area (!) and rubbing a bit seemed to ease the pressure a bit.
