Hi, me and my husband are wanting to try for our first child. However, there's always been a niggling fear as my Grandma died shortly after having my Dad. It was heart failure/mitral valve disease (if that makes a difference).
Am I being silly for worrying so much? I was going to ring the doctors to see if they had any advice. Would appreciate any thoughts.

You definitely aren’t silly for worrying. I have a hereditary heart condition which has killed 2 women in my family shortly after childbirth (this was before it was found but has been proven now childbirth had a significant affect on their heart). Before TTC I spoke to my doctor about how I would be monitored etc through pregnancy and my birth which really put my mind at ease. I’m 30 weeks now and have regular heart scans to make sure all is ok x

Not to be too flippant but how many years ago was your Dad born? Medical science is changing all the time, and will have come on a lot since then. Speak to your GP before conception if you are really worried. You may possibly be eligible for a scan to check you haven't inherited anything.

I've never been told I have a problem with my heart, but it's always really made me cautious about wanting children. So glad it's all going well for you! That makes me feel a lot calmer, I think I'll definitely speak to the doctors just to make sure there isn't anything.

Oh I completely agree. And I know she was warned and still went ahead with the pregnancy. I've always suffered with anxiety so I know I'm likely over thinking it.

Always better to be safe than sorry! Your doctor would never think you are silly if you go to them with a concern Smile
