What do they mean by "washing thoroughly"?

So, because of the risk of listeria, they say wash fruit and veg thoroughly. But what exactly does that mean? If you're rinsing blueberries, how long do you run them under the tap? I'm not sure whether I am rinsing for too long or not rinsing enough!

I only ever rinsed fruit under the tap. With veg you'd get rid of visible dirt.

I just rinse them under the tap and remove any visable dirt. It's not listeria, it's for toxoplamosis i think. Don't drive yourself mad with it though. A good rinse under the tap should be fine

I rinse it under the tap twice as long as "normal". E.g. if before I was giving a single wash to the salad, now I do it twice. Make sure there is no visible dirt. Nothing crazy.

Giving something a ‘rinse’ under the tap has always baffled me a bit, because it humble water killed/removed bacteria there would be no need to cook food or clean with any products.

Yeah it’ll get rid of physical dirt but that’s just organic matter anyway and not that bad for you.

I wonder.

I'm pretty sure it's for listeria, too, but, yeah, rinsing twice as long is basically what I do as well.

That’s what I mean though listeria is a bacteria, if humble water killed/got rid of bacteria then we’ve been conned 😬🤷🏽‍♀️
