Maternal request C Section Derby Hospital

ElmtreeMama · 28/07/2021 06:48

Having looked on the birthrights website it says Derby hospital is rates red and had 0 maternal request c sections
Due to previous sexual trauma and PTSD I plan on asking for an elective ceasarian but am now worried it will be a difficult process.

Any one with any experience who can help put my mind at rest?

No experience with Derby but some hospitals don't offer elective sections and will refer you to another hospital to have one. Have you checked to see if Derby are the same?

Thanks @mummyh2016

Is there somewhere I can check this or is it just a case of asking?

I am seeing my midwife in 2 weeks so can ask her then maybe

It's because they don't offer planned c sections only emergency ones - not all hospitals can accommodate both as they may only have one theatre or staff available for one theatre and they can't tie resources up all day doing planned sections. . You will need to just choose a hospital which does offer them - usually the bigger regional ones but may mean travel and to a hospital which you wouldn't necessarily choose otherwise

I don't know to be honest, the hospitals I am referring about it's quite well known and was well publicised when they brought it in a couple of years ago. I've just googled though and there is a mention about booked caesareans at Derby so I don't think it's the case there so you should be able to book one I'd have thought.

Thank you @ivfgottwins and @mummyh2016

I had a maternal request elective at Derby last year. They did try and put me off give me all the 'facts' in the consultation but I was firm in my decision (there were also a few tears) and the consultant signed it off.

It is your right to choose but I suspect that they will always attempt to sway women toward a natural birth as it's cheaper.

The consultant did say they would refer me to a healthcare professional to discuss my anxieties around giving birth but no one ever got in touch.

It was the best decision I made and the care in Derby was fantastic.

@ElmtreeMama I had the exact same problem, though am not at Derby, my trust is on the red list. I was terrified but prepared to fight for what I needed.

At my booking in I told the midwife my history and that I did not want vaginal examinations or a vaginal birth. She was amazing and my trust have a special team to deal with it, I have my first appointment in a few weeks. It is considered a medical issue and not maternal request in these circumstances.

I’ve yet to get it booked and so we will see what happens next but I’m not as stressed about it as I was.

Thanks @VanquishGirl :)

Thats really good to hear.

I was referred to perinatal mental health at 10 weeks (now 23 weeks) but haven't heard from them yet.

I will have to try and be firm but did find my consultant to be pretty unsympathetic

When I was pregnant with dc2 I was determined to have a c section due to previous trauma. I was told at my booking in appointment that it should be fine but that I wouldn’t get a definite answer until 34 weeks when I’d meet the consultant. So just be aware you possibly won’t be able to get a definite answer from your midwife at this stage.

Good luck, remember to be very clear that you know what you want and you understand the differences in risks etc.

Ah yes, that's a really good point.

It wasn't until I was 36 weeks that I got the final sign off.

@ElmtreeMama I had an elective section at Derby earlier this year following a traumatic birth with my first. They were absolutely fantastic. Your consultant will give you the facts and highlight the risks but just tell them you've made your decision.
