Hi,

I have had a telephone appointment today with my consultant who has advised that I have transvaginal scans to check the length and strength of my cervix due to having a LLETZ last year. Most chats I’ve read have suggested people had these every 4 weeks but he has suggested every 2 weeks from 16-24 weeks. Should I be worried? Do you have experience of this?

Thank you

I have experience of this. I also had a LLETZ, couple years ago now, i am pregnant now and had to push for a cervix scan but got one in the end and my cervix was measuring really long so didn't need repeat scans or any further treatment. Definitely nothing to worry about. I think it depends on how much cervix was removed as to if you need a cervical stitch put in. Do you have that info? X

I only had one scan at 20 weeks. All was fine and I'm now 31w3d with no concerns. I was signed straight back to midwife led care. It's a very short and painless procedure, I would only worry if they tell you they find something worth worrying about. It's all precautionary!

Some trusts do more than one scan. I was told scanning at 20 weeks has been found to give the most accurate estimate on outcome given that cervix length changes throughout a normal pregnancy, shortening naturally before birth.

@uglynakedguy0808 I don't remember the measurement to be honest it was all a bit of a blur as it was covid times I had to do it alone so don't even have my partners memory to rely on. I don't think it was a huge amount I remember her showing me on her nail!

@GummyBear91 I think I'm worrying as they have said every 2 weeks over that time frame.

It's awful I was stressed for the first 12 weeks due to no symptoms etc, them I've had a chilled 2 weeks and now I've been thrown back into stressing!

@BellaBoo7 I believe that's just procedure for some trusts. I was worried about the fact I was only offered one as I heard others got more scans than me.

I sympathise though as I was more worried about these scans then actually seeing baby! Just remember they are precautionary and there are things they can do if they need to which help prevent anything scary happening.

Good luck!

@GummyBear91 thank you for the support. Hopefully it is just procedure then to book that many. It’s the stitch that terrifies me x

My trust if there is a previous letz they only at 18-22 weeks so normally tag it on the top bed of the 20 week scan.
If there was a preterm loss or an extra deep extraversion of the cervix or, 2 or more letz they scan from 14 weeks every 2 weeks.

BellaBoo7 · 27/07/2021 16:55

@ShinyBadger it sounds like the rules are set from area to area then as I’ve only had 1 lletz and didn’t think it was particularly deep but he did ask me what grade the cells were 🤷‍♀️

@BellaBoo7 - oh yes all trusts are different, by when saving babies lives 2 was bought in by NHSE the new guidance was a single cervical length at 18-22 weeks, but not all trusts have adopted the changes yet. You also may find that the dr will request it but when it’s comes to being booked it cld be a single scan instead as they are not always up to-date with the latest changes!
Don’t worry about the scans and the cervix is a muscle so it also expands and contracts also.
I have had a lettz and have a cervical length booked for 20 Weeks as part of my 20 week scan.
Your be fine :)

It may be because you only had the lletz done last year. I'd had mine done 9 months before falling pregnant. First cervical scan at 21 weeks, all ok, had another at 24 weeks and it has shortened by 1cm, I avoided the stitch and it was managed with progesterone pessaries and then rest from 32 weeks until I was considered term. Doesn't always result in a stitch, good that you're getting monitored though :)

BellaBoo7 · 27/07/2021 19:16

@annlee3817 it’s good to hear about someone that was offered progesterone instead hopefully all doctors would consider that

@ShinyBadger they are quite quick with getting sending letters out so hopefully I’ll find out in the next couple of days if it will be as he said or under the new guidelines
