Clotting factor

Does anyone know what it means to have low clotting factor or low platelets (think they’re the same?) I’m 30 weeks and my midwife rang to say my clotting factor is a bit low and she will be calling haematology to get an appointment with them but I’m unsure what all of that actually means? I’m going to see her tomorrow but for now my thoughts are taking over! What does it mean for giving birth? Will anything change? I don’t have a clue!

If it’s low platelets it could be something called gestational thrombocytopenia. Treatment/ birth plan will be dependent on how low your number is. If they drop below (I think) 70 then you won’t be able to have an epidural and if you need a c-section it’s likely to be under general as they would prefer to avoid giving a spinal block. It’s also recommended you have the injection to help the placenta pass, to avoid haemorrhage, and I think vit K for baby. It sounds like you’ll also be under consultant care, which in my experience just meant a few extra appointments and blood tests to keep an eye on you. I think there is also an autoimmune version of this but I have no experience of what the treatment for that is.

With low platelets you are at a higher risk of haemorrhage, so chances are you won’t be able to give birth in a midwife led unit as they will want you in a consultant led unit so they can keep a close eye.

Mine dipped to below 70 (can’t remember exact number) and this is what I was told. My platelets came back up quite quickly after birth though and no adverse effects for my baby.
