Hi everyone

I have been using Sudafed nasal spray for my hayfever but I have seen mixed messages as to whether to use it during pregnancy.

Has anyone else used it during pregnancy?

Thanks

Which nasal spray is it?
Don't think the one with xylometazoline hydrochloride is suitable during pregnancy.

It is that one! There hasn't been any studies into it and people say that nasal spray is mostly absorbed in the nose so is fine but just not sure if anyone else has used it so I can see if anything happened with them!

You can use corticosteroid sprays e.g. beconase but not decongestants

I have tried them ones but they're not working !! 😢

onlinedoctor.lloydspharmacy.com/uk/allergy/hay-fever-medication-in-pregnancy This sets out the various things you can use

But you're only supposed to use sudafed type sprays for a max of 7 days even if not pregnant or you get rebound congestion

Have you tried an antihistamine?

I suffer terribly with nasal inflammation due to polyps (which according to ENT, arent an issue).
Ive used this Sudafed spray for ages because nothing on prescription works, including steroid sprays.
I stopped taking it when I fell pregnant and i couldnt breathe and sleep comfortably so tried again with a variety of different 'safe' nasal sprays but nothing worked.
I spoke to my GP who said they dont advise taking it but there is no evidence that it cant be used in pregnancy, mainly because there havent been extensive tests on the medication (like the majority of meds on the market). The majority is absorbed within the nose and the dose is so small, it is unlikely to cause restricted blood flow to baby. Im not a GP though so please dont quote me on this.
I have been using it, not a whole spray in each nostril but almost like a half spray. Everything in scans etc have been fine so far and no obvious concerns.
Id rather not use it but I cant be unable to breathe either.

Thank you so much for this!! I have the same problem. How far gone are you?

I can't breathe without it either it is so hard. I have really tried but nothing else works! I just take it at night to let me sleep!

Flutterby8 · 25/07/2021 13:02

Im 20 weeks so far.

CDH1 · 25/07/2021 13:03

Congratulations! Have you taken it your whole pregnancy and how many times a day do you take it?!

Flutterby8 · 25/07/2021 13:32

Thank you 😊
I stopped taking it for the first few weeks while I tried everything else, only to find nothing worked at all.
I tried a steroid based spray for a few weeks but it made absolutely no difference and thats when my GP said about using it when needed, basically if desperate.
I currently use it at night, normally half a spray and when I get up in the morning only if I am really struggling.
I havent had anything abnormal found with baby so far and Ive recently started to feel movement as well.
I dont feel it is ideal to take it, but, without using it I suffer so badly. It is physically imppssible to breathe through my nose and sleep is a nightmare.
