When to go see the doctor

Hi, we've taken a pregnancy test (3) and they've all come back positive, I was due on yesterday when I took them. How long do I wait to contact the doctor? I went for my smear test a few months ago it came back negative thankfully but whilst I was there they said I had an ucler on my cervix.

Because of this I'm so excited but in the back of my mind I'm thinking worst case scenario.

Don't think you need to see a doctor
You are only a few weeks pregnant and I don't think a midwife would see you until you are a bit further along. Can you self refer to the midwife team? Not sure how it works now

Pissinthepottyplease · 24/07/2021 11:55

Never usually. You just need to ring the GP surgery or look on their website to find out how to self refer to a midwife.

What did they say about your cervix? Did they suggest STI a testing or saying anything about needing treatment?

I didn’t need to see my doctor. I contacted them on the Monday morning and they gave me my NHS number and gave me the number for the midwife unit. The midwife then rang me a week or so later to book my booking in appointment. If you have any bleeding or anything you’re concerned about with the ulcer, ring the early pregnancy assessment unit for your hospital, otherwise bring it up with your midwife at your booking appointment which is usually about 8 weeks.

No need to see or contact Dr.

It’s actually completely underwhelming.

Midwives here are not interested until after 10 weeks either.

No one medically bothered at all tbh.

It’s worth ringing the midwife unit to self refer early as some of them of short staffed right now so appreciate a longer lead time to schedule you in. But yes, you don’t need to see a doctor and the midwife likely will schedule you a booking appointment around 8-10 weeks.

In my trust you self refer to the midwives but can't do it before you are 6 weeks pregnant. However it's best to check the situation where you are and get some advice re the ulcer.
My booking appointment was just a few days before the 12 week scan but I had to go a week before that just to be weighed and have a blood test so they'd have the results in time for the booking appointment.

I phoned my midwife (currently just over 5 weeks) they said I had to phone back when I was 7 weeks before they would see me. It's kinda nee to me coz with my first I didn't find out til I was 13 weeks

It depends where you are, in my area we have to contact GP to declare pregnancy then they refer you to midwife who will in turn get in touch around 8-10 weeks. My GP are doing phone triage at the moment and once I'd had a brief chat with her I got another short call from the midwife to book the longer call, and she put me a load of leaflets (and my booking bloods form) in the post.

Other areas you self-refer directly to midwifery but if you ring the GP reception they'll soon tell you which it is.

I've only spoken to my GP practice this time to get my various jabs and because I needed some indigestion medication, but in other areas the midwives do some of the jabs, I believe.

I called my GP surgery to let them know I’m pregnant, they then text me a link to the midwives for this area and you complete a self referral. Drs surgery weren’t particularly interested but said they would note my pregnancy on my records. Midwives called me about a week and a half later and did my booking apt over the phone, I have another apt to go along for height/weight/bloods etc next week. Congrats and best of luck!xx
