Amitriptyline and TTC

I'm prescribed Amitriptyline for migraine prevention and also Sumatriptan for migraine relief.

Me and DH are going to TTC soon and just wondering if anyone else has used this medication too, if so, were you advised to stop or carry on? The NHS website states not suitable but I know it can be very objective and generalised.

TIA ☺️

Hi, I was on both when I conceived. A GP/obstetrician discussed with me the risks of amitriptyline while pregnant and as I was on a low dose I decided to stay on this until 6 weeks before I was due and weaned myself off them with their guidance as otherwise baby can go through withdrawal. The sumatriptan i didn't need through pregnancy as I was really lucky not to have any migraines (from 1-2 a month!)
If you're concerned, make an appointment with the gp to discuss but everything was ok for me,my little one is nearly 4 months old now

@MissLC great news to hear your LO is thriving 😁

I also didn't need the sumatriptan in my previous pregnancy thankfully so I'm hopeful I won't need it this time round either.

May I ask what dosage you had?
I've been prescribed 25mg Ami and just upped sumatriptan from 50mg to 100mg.

I feel awkward phoning and asking as it's my first day today starting the Ami! I spoke to my GP yesterday regarding the migraines being worse and she suggested the Ami as a preventative but didn't ask me about TTC/pregnancy etc and I didn't think to mention it... silly me 🤦🏼‍♀️

My GP told me i couldn't be on it due to possible foetal deformities so had to stop and come off it before ttc. Thankfully i didn't suffer from migraines during my pregnancy which was very odd as i had them on a monthly basis before but then i had sever hyperemesis instead and was on multiple medications including steroids and baby was perfect. I havent had any since giving birth so not sure if my migraines were all hormone related. Sorry I cant help you anymore. GP may have just said it to cover his own back.

@HereWeGoAgain24 I was on 20mg amitriptyline once a day and then 50mg sumatriptan x2 on attack.
My GP was going to start me on beta blockers pre pregnancy and had it all written out until I asked about it being safe when TTC so I wouldn't worry about ringing to check if that would make you feel more confident.
The GP and obstetrician told me about a website called Bump I think that shows any research into dangers of medication both pre and post pregnancy. I didn't see anything related to possible deformities but I can't say that @abbs1 isn't correct unfortunately but obviously very different advice to what I was given. Sorry that its not much help, but wishing you all the best x

I was prescribed Amitryptiline by a peri natal pyschiatrist when l was pregnant.

She told me it was the safest drug in pregnancy as it was one of the oldest and had the most data on it.

Dd is now 15 and 5ft 11. She seems pretty normal ( as normal as a teen can be anyway!)
