I was wondering what people opinions are on what the best newborn formula is?

I’m hoping to breast feed, however I have breast implants and an old nipple piercing (over 10 years old) which didn’t heal properly when I took it out about 6/7 years ago. The midwife said I will probably be ok to breast feed but to have supplies in just incase.

So Iv been and got the bottles and the steriliser and the prep machine. Went to the supermarket to get some formula and there was so much there I felt overwhelmed and left with nothing!

They are basically all the same. They all have to follow certain guild lines and strict requirements. I did Aptimal with first born which is on of the more expensive ones and did Aldi Mamia second time around but used the Aptimal Orr made a bottles for when out.

SummerHouse · 21/07/2021 13:43

They are all pretty much the same in standard newborn. We used aptimil.

Greenwateringcan · 21/07/2021 13:43

They’re all the same. Get whatever one you can get the easiest from the supermarket you usually go to

SummerHouse · 21/07/2021 13:44

Get some cartons if you can afford. They are a godsend but am expensive one. We used them if out and about.

I've used cow and gate first milk for both off mine

ExcitingTimes2021 · 21/07/2021 13:47

Ah thanks. I was looking at them all and there was organic, anti-collic, anti-constipation, added iron, extra vitamins, ideal for growth…. the selection was just endless! I’ll have to buy some next time. I have a pack of the ready made bottles for my hospital bag and when I bought them I just bought what was on the shelf as there wasn’t much choice. But the shelves where filled with the tins! X

They’re pretty much the same because formula is so tightly regulated. Hipp is organic if that has appeal. For convenience I’d get one that is available in a lot of places and also as ready made in the cartons. If you’re taking it to the hospital then I’d recommend getting starter pack which has bottle teats as it’s not really possible to sterilise in hospital.

LakeShoreD · 21/07/2021 13:54

X post. You just want Stage 1 formula.

Anti colic, comfort, reflux etc should only be fed on the advice of a medical professional. Follow on milk, sometimes called stage 2, is a marketing gimmick and can’t be given to babies under 6 months. Hungry baby is for under 6 month olds draining >8oz bottles every couple of hours.

If you’ve got ready made for your hospital bag already then I’d get the same brand but in powder form for at home as you’re not supposed to chop and change the brand without good reason.

BertieBotts · 21/07/2021 13:56

Have a look at first steps nutrition Trust as they can help you see through the marketing stuff.

I think I chose one without palm oil but can't remember the brand now. Also I had DC2 in Germany and there is none of this insistence on sticking with one brand in case it upsets the baby's tummy to switch. So I wonder if that's not a myth perpetuated by the companies as well! It certainly works well for them as once they've got you they have you as a customer for the next X months or even years.

There a good book by Lucy ruddle called mixed up which is good about mixed feeding as well.

Floralnomad · 21/07/2021 13:59

Im medically unable to breastfeed and we used SMA because it was many many years ago and they were the only brand that our local supermarkets stocked in the ready made large cartons .

LakeShoreD · 21/07/2021 14:01

Really interesting that there’s no advice about brand switching in Germany. I did move countries when my first was 8 months and straight switched brands, and this was U.K.->US so I think the formula is quite different (it’s a different colour for starters) and not a hint of a stomach upset. So I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it’s yet more marketing bollocks!

sarah13xx · 21/07/2021 14:01

I’ve gone with hipp organic. I was between it and aptamil. Was swayed by the fact there seemed to be a huge shortage of aptamil in shops and saw an article about babies experiencing less digestive issues if you start them on hipp organic so I’ve gone with it. Who knew there would be so many options 🙈

Cosybelles · 21/07/2021 14:02

HIPP organic worked for us whereas Cow and Gate really upset her stomach. The ready made bottles are very handy if you are just getting some as a backup.

miltonj · 21/07/2021 14:07

We use hipp organic. By the way, you don't have to change over onto 'follow on' or 'next steps' or to the next number. The first infant formula can be used throughout, the other milks are just a way for the formula companies to get around advertising laws and have no extra benefit to your baby, so don't be fooled!

idontlikealdi · 21/07/2021 14:11

Get what ever they stock in your local corner shop, you will no doubt run out at some point and what something easy to get hold of!

ItsSnowJokes · 21/07/2021 14:16

Hipp organic was great for my daughter.

ExcitingTimes2021 · 22/07/2021 13:59

Iv gone for that Hipp organic one as seemed to be the most recommended. Thanks everyone. Still hoping to breast feed but best to be prepared! X
