NIPT TEST 1 IN 5 CHANCE OF DOWNS SYNDROME

I've had the Nipt test through the nhs as i have a 1 in 5 chance of baby having downs syndrome, I am 31 and had a high level of hcg and inhibin a.
Wondered if anyone is going through the same or has been and if anyone understands the numbers from the tests and what they should be? Thanks x

Bump

Was the 1 in 5 from the NIPT or from NHS Screening? I’m also 31 and my chance from screening was 1 in 14. I had the NIPT twice and came back without enough fetal dna both times then ended up having an Amnio and all was clear. Baby has looked fine on all scans since then (and I’ve had a lot!). What gestation did you have NHS screening - I assume cos they looked at inhibin it was >14 weeks?

VickyB90 · 23/07/2021 13:30

@KTF367 Yes i was past 14 weeks, oh no I didn't realise that could happen! I bet that was annoying thinking you were getting results and then not! How was the amnio? I bet you were relieved with the all clear! It was a nipt test through the nhs im not sure of the difference? Really glad baby has been fine on the scans since! Thanks for replying x

I'm not an expert on this, but I think NIPT is more accurate than nhs screening. They test foetal dna taken from your blood. Perhaps talk to your doctor. You can consider amnio... that will confirm for you.
I had my pregnancy abroad so hopefully someone else will reply to set the record straight. Very best of luck x

She's doing great. Everything read normal at her 18w scan and onwards. Happy 18m old.x

ItsSnowJokes · 23/07/2021 14:28

So the NHS NIPT test came back as 1 in 5? It's not very clear from your posts.

If the NIPT came back as 1 in 5 I would be pushing for a amnio as soon as possible.

If this was the screening before the NIPT and you are still waiting for your results I would hold on until you know the results of your NIPT.

VickyB90 · 23/07/2021 14:53

@ItsSnowJokes yes 1 in in 5 from the quad, now waiting on NIPT test results .

I had my 12 week scan and my downs syndrome result was 1 in 95 chance. I had NIPT and that came back as lower risk so haven't had amnio. The NIPT result is only lower risk or higher risk of any of the syndromes, not a figure. Both the 12 week tests and NIPT are screening so can't give you a definite answer. Amniocentesis is diagnostic and will tell you if your baby does or doesn't have DS

BabyMoonPie · 23/07/2021 15:06

The NHS offers additional screening to anyone with a figure of 1 in 150 or less at their 12 week testing

littleredberries · 23/07/2021 18:57

Thanks Vicky I'll be following this thread. X

The quad screening is even less accurate than the 12 week screening!

I wouldn’t worry yet. NIPT is incredibly accurate for Downs, Edwards and Pataus as a screening tool, it’s not diagnostic though, but the negative indicative result is over 99% accurate. How was baby looking on the scan, could you see a nasal bone? (Lack of nasal bone is apparently a soft marker for DS)

KTF367 · 24/07/2021 07:58

I thought about it like this - I think the quad test is 60 or 70% accurate which means it picks up 60-70% of cases. That figure doesn’t factor in how many false positives it gives (you’re told you’re high risk and baby is fine)

KTF367 · 24/07/2021 08:03

Which I think it’s lots and lots btw!

How did it go op? Have you had your next appointment yet?
