Hi all,

I got the dreaded call yesterday that I do have GD, they tested me so late as baby is measuring big. I have a growth scan booked for this Thursday when I will be 37+6 and don’t see the diabetes consultant until the following Monday when I will be just over 38 weeks.

I’m not sure what to expect, has anyone been induced due to GD and/or large baby?

I had GD in first pregnancy diagnosed at 28 weeks, been tested at 16 and 26 weeks in this pregnancy and so far so good but I am resigned to developing it eventually.

I was induced at 38 weeks with my first as he was measuring big (despite being diet controlled from 28 weeks)

I would highly recommend the GDUK website (and linked FB group if you are on social media), so that you can get to grips with the diet first and foremost

I feel like it is crazy that they have told you have it but haven't given you anything further and are leaving you for a week before seeing the consultant! x

That’s very helpful thank you! I will have a look now, not on Facebook but may need to create a profile to have a look at the group I’ve heard it’s very good.

I got my blood monitor today at the chemist, don’t really know how or when to use it as I won’t see anyone until next week, completely left to my own devices! Trying not to stress or worry about it as my blood pressure will just go through the roof again.. I would have though I would have seen the consultant before next week but hey ho xx

The group is amazing, I would not have got through my first pregnancy without it!

I can only make assumptions and the numbers vary from trust to trust for some reason.. but mine was to be below 5.3 for fasting (i.e. first thing in the morning) and less than 7.8 1 hour after meal so I was testing 4 times a day.

Advice I would offer too is to thoroughly wash your hands before any testing - with just water because soap can send your numbers sky high! Also, if you do get unexpected high numbers then drink a lot of water and go for a little walk to help bring it down :)

If you have a monitor, just give it a little test run. But don't worry too much about any results until someone has properly run through everything with you.

Honestly baffled as to how they can leave you that long with no direction! x

I was diagnosed via the blood glucose test at my GP but had to wait for a diabetes clinic that only ran on certain days so had some time in limbo too. My reading was 0.4 above the acceptable level and so they explained that they were happy to wait but it's crazy that they haven't said anything to you about your reading and to reassure you. You can only assume that if your result was a real issue, they would call you in sooner and so please don't worry about it (easier said than done I know).

In relation to the induction, my consultant said that it depends on whether you are able to manage it by diet only and what your readings have been like as to whether they induce you or let you go over your due date. I got the impression that it varies from trust to trust based on their own policies though and so some might have a blanket rule of induction before due date regardless of circumstances, I don't know.

My trust said the exact same as the previous poster but I did find that my results varied depending on which finger I used! I would always use my thumb or little finger as the others would have a higher reading. Hopefully the consultant will go through this with you next week!
