Scared I overheated today and damaged baby

Hi everyone,

I'm currently 7 weeks pregnant. My partner and myself went to a safari park in the UK today. My partner's aircon isn't working, so we bought a car fan.

We had the windows down most of the time, but obviously during the lion and tiger part we had to shut them.

I was sweating so much in the car despite the fan and drinking lots of water. It was about 25 degrees in the car.

I'm now really worried that I damaged the baby because I overheated and feel so stupid for going to the park today.

Did anyone have a similar experience of overheating in pregnancy and everything turned out okay? xx

You do realise that people in hot countries have babies? You're being daft.

3ormorecharacters · 17/07/2021 23:09

Baby will be fine. Babies have been born in much hotter places for millions of years!

Garman · 17/07/2021 23:10

Women live in countries that are hotter than that and have healthy babies all the time, you couldn't overheat and do damage in that small time frame. Don't even give it another thought, nothing to worry about.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 17/07/2021 23:11

7 weeks?!

I honestly doubt anyone has had a similar experience because it’s a really ludicrous thing to worry about. Of course your baby is ok. It doesn’t know anything about what you’re doing at this point.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 17/07/2021 23:13

nonsense.
it's simply not a thing and you didn't damage your baby.

people live in permanently hot climates and their babies are fine.
please talk to somebody as this level of anxiety is just unhealthy. if you worry about every non-event like this you'll have a nervous breakdown. you don't want to do that.

baby is fine. 100%. relax

Eleoura · 17/07/2021 23:14

Do you have health anxiety or other issues? If you are this concerned now, at 7 weeks about some warm weather, I'd suggest speaking to your GP/MW about getting counselling, or just getting it yourself.

DramaAlpaca · 17/07/2021 23:15

Your baby will have come to no harm. Don't worry.

ScandiCandy · 17/07/2021 23:15

Your baby will be absolutely fine. At 8 weeks pregnant, I went out on a day trip in Australia in 40+ degree heat (out and about all day in the sun).

He's turning 10 soon Smile

FullMoon1 · 17/07/2021 23:19

I have anxiety, yes.

I worry because I read if core body temperature is raised too high in pregnancy it can cause miscarriage or birth defects.

I know I'm probably being daft. 😳

As others have said, baby will be fine!

Also, there's really no point having the fan on with windows down. Closed windows (i.e. a more confined space) would allow the air to cool quicker and more effectively.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 17/07/2021 23:21

Yeah but what you read probably relates to fever. If you’re going to google everything due to your anxiety you’re going to have to try and think more rationally about it or you’re going to drive yourself up the wall.

Let me tell you, nine months is a LONG time.

ItsallBollocksanyway · 17/07/2021 23:21

Don't feel bad about worrying. It's a weird time and full of hormonal changes so everything can seem like a danger. You won't have damaged the baby at all. I know they say to avoid hot tubs and excessive heat but from what I remember it's to prevent mum suffering from a change in blood pressure

Terhou · 17/07/2021 23:22

There is absolutely no way your core body temperature was raised too high in temperatures of 25 degrees.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 17/07/2021 23:22

I had 3 of my kids in July.
my youngest is 7 tomorrow and was born on the hottest day of that year.
I also had 2 in December so suffered through hot weather earlier on in those pgs.

my core was temp was akin to lava. they are all fine.

I'm sure you and baby will be fine! I electrocuted myself on an electric fence when I was about 25 weeks. I was very worried at the time but DS was totally fine and now 2 and healthy 😊

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 17/07/2021 23:47

@polkadotpixie

bloody hell dude!
great origin story though...🤣

Kona84 · 18/07/2021 09:11

Your core temp probably didn’t increase the body is wonderful at maintaining core temperature hence the sweat.

MyMabel · 18/07/2021 09:23

Not an ideal example but I’m terrible for not drinking water enough, I like water I just never think to drink during the day unless I’ve eaten something that makes me particularly thirsty.

It’s important to stay hydrated; but you wouldn’t have damaged your baby.

Important things to avoid are sunburn and heat stroke. Which if your even semi-sensible aren’t hard to avoid, stay in the shade as much as you can, wear a decent suncream, drink plenty and use a fan as you have.

Coffeesnob11 · 18/07/2021 09:30

Just to reassure you I commute to London on packed tunes and trains (pre covid) and 3 years ago there was a heatwave. I had to stand pregnant every day in terrible heat and although my ankles disappeared and I couldn't fit my shoes on my baby (now toddler was perfectly fine. I always carried water, a snack, a plastic bag (I had daily sickness until the end and a mini fan). I also flew up to 35 weeks for work and spent long hours travelling to clients in a colleagues unairconditioned car. I just asked for regular breaks and the window open. I know its hard not to worry but the chances of anything happening are low.

EileenGC · 18/07/2021 09:32

My mum had us all in 40º heat and neither of us have birth defects. Nor does 99% of my country’s population, where most people will have been conceived and/or born in extremely high temperatures.

Make sure you’re keeping hydrated and of course if you feel lightheaded etc, sit down for a bit and don’t overdo it. But you’ll be fine!

SmallPrawnEnergy · 18/07/2021 09:39

Women birthing in hotter climates are acclimatised to the heat, which is why there is no worry to them Hmm people don’t bloody think before posting.

I hope the NCT link helps op. Yes, there is a chance that if your core body temperature is raised during first trimester it can be linked to birth defects but your temp needs to go above 39 and that would probably be from a fever or massive exertion in hot weather. My house was 27 / 28 degrees last night. As long as you stayed relatively cool and well hydrated you’ll be ok.

Undersnatch · 18/07/2021 09:57

Aw sorry for the critical responses, try not to feel daft. In early pregnancy especially you are so tuned to the development of your baby and the huge responsibility to take care of them. But as others have reassured you, honestly, your body is well able to cope with fluctuations of temp and to keep baby’s temp constant. I am sure they are snug and developing nicely.

Soexciting · 18/07/2021 10:03

I went round Woburn with no aircon during a heatwave. Felt like I was in an oven but it was fine. I also ignored all the if you are pregnant let us know signs on the foot safari because I had literally just had a miscarriage the month before...I was pregnant. Don't think my baby or yours will be overcooked from the hot safari experience!

SHB2021 · 19/07/2021 10:58

Can’t believe how harsh people are on here! What might sound daft to one person is a serious worry to others.
Be kind. This poster might be worried about posting something later on now.
