First trimester - surviving the heat

Any tips please on what you’re drinking and keeping down in this heat if you’re suffering with morning sickness? I have read so many threads and tried so many things; ice water, orange squash, lucozade, fresh cold milk, sucking ice cubes, ice lollies, orange juice (which was the absolute worst) but I am just so thirsty and cannot find a drink that I can comfortably consume at a reasonable amount? McDonalds coke is probably the closest thing but even then, I am only just coping with that.

Funnily enough, as much as I have awful nausea I can combat it enough to eat a reasonable amount and keep it down, but liquid is another story..

I am worried about dehydration but to be honest think I am just about having enough and it’s more that I would love a cold glass of something that won’t upset my stomach and make me uncomfortable or throw up.

Hi OP. Third trimester here, it’s so hard in the heat I understand! Can you try water based fruit and veg for a boost? So maybe cucumber or watermelon or melon? In terms of drinking I fear you have to work out what works for you. In my first trimester I tried everything too, all that I could stand was milk which isn’t much help to you. If you’re really struggling and think you’re at risk of becoming dehydrated, please seek medical help. X

Hey third trimester here too, only 7 weeks to go and the eat is a killer. Frozen grapes with jelly powder sprinkled over are amazing, refreshing and healthy.
Take them all off, wash them, sprinkle powder over and freeze. Simple!

Heat*

I'm newly pregnant and constantly feeling sick / heartburn. I'm luckily able to manage regular little sips of water. I've bought 2 cucumbers today and a load of yellow peppers as hopefully they will help keep me hydrated. I had a fruit pastilles ice lolly today which was much better than the chocolate pudding last night

Are you able to ask advice from GP etc?

Taenia · 17/07/2021 19:45

Water was the absolute worst for me. I found weak orange squash in sips helped best with ice cubes. Little sips often I found much easier than trying to take normal gulps as that just made me sick. Ice lollies I found helped me too.

Thanks for your advice all. I am in contact with the GP and trying different anti-emetics but haven’t found the right meds/combination of meds yet.

I have tried some different watery foods like fruit but struggling with sweeter foods at the moment also find some fruits a bit acidic tasting.

I think I struggle a lot with that metallic taste in my mouth after I drink, so it might be just finding the drink for me.

@Taenia Just trying some very weak squash and doing ok but agree that it helps if I take small sips.

Frozen apple juice which I then crushed and ate with a spoon.

LH1987 · 17/07/2021 20:51

Also seedless watermelon if you can manage it

thingymaboob · 17/07/2021 22:36

@catinthehat12 I have Hyperemesis and I find fruit quite acidic but I have found that I can tolerate smash. It has a really high water content.

Katefoster · 17/07/2021 23:17

My biggest craving throughout pregnancy is freezing cold bottled water. I'm going through gallons of the stuff 🤦🏽‍♀️

Ednadidit · 18/07/2021 12:15

Gosh yes @catinthehat12 once you’re being sick a lot it’s incredible how many foods actually feel really acidic coming back. I was surprised by how acidic watermelon was when my hyperemesis was bad.

I relied on fruit ice lollies - orange, fruit pastille, calippo… whatever I could find in the nearest shop. It was months before I was able to drink water without it turning my stomach, so I hope it turns around for you soon. I also found it was easier to keep water down if I sipped in through a straw. Maybe because the sips are even smaller? Silicon straws meant I didn’t even have to sit up to sip.

TravellingJack · 18/07/2021 12:28

Have you tried fizzy water? Hyperemesis here, and I found that while I couldn't keep tap water down, I could drink cold fizzy water. I also lived on watermelon etc for a few weeks with the occasional slice of toast, but fizzy water is really my go-to, even when feeling really nauseous. San Pellegrino is best for me which is annoying as it's not cheap (plus loads of plastic bottles) but it's the only thing I have not yet thrown up.

whistlers · 18/07/2021 12:58

Currently drinking san pellegrino from a glass bottle because the smell of plastic bottles makes me feel sick at the moment. Godddddd so fed up

catinthehat12 · 18/07/2021 16:27

Thanks all some really good ideas here - smash is a clever one. I have never been a fan of fizzy water to be honest, I haven’t tried it as the thought is enough but it might be worth it.

It is funny how much different foods can taste acidic.

Currently keeping down a nice slush drink so almost frozen water might also be a clever idea.

Nice (or not nice really) to see others suffering along too. I am only 8 weeks so many more weeks of this to go.
