Do they scan you before a c-section? Possibly breech

I’m having a c-section anyway but I’m now pretty certain I can feel baby’s head high up and he must be breech. My next midwife appointment is next week at 38 weeks. If she feels him and says he is breech what happens? Obviously I don’t care what way he’s facing since he’s not using that exit anyway 😂 but will I be sent for a scan or will they scan me to see where he is on the day of the c-section?

If you're having a section anyway it doesn't matter what way he is, I don't see why they'd do a scan to confirm it.

DS was breech and the Dr wheeled round a scanner to my bed before they took me down to confirm what position he was in before the operation.

They said they wouldn’t do my c section if he’d moved head down so I was pretty anxious before he double checked it.

Good luck!

If you are having a c section regardless, then you won’t be scanned beforehand (it’s a waste of time and resources). If your c section is because of the baby’s position, and you wish to deliver vaginally if possible, then you will be scanned.

I had a planned c section a couple of years ago and they didn't do a scan before. I had had one about 6 weeks earlier though so we were pretty sure she was head down.

I had a c section and they just felt my bump that day and confirmed he was lying sideways. Section was planned based off a scan at 38 weeks confirming he was transverse. My consultant said they perform the op slightly differently for a breach baby so they check before.

If there's any doubt as to presentation, they should do a quick bedside scan to confirm. Doesn't make much difference to your operation, but surgeons don't particularly like surprises.

This has happened to me this week. I mentioned the breech at the pre-op and they scanned me there and then to confirm. They also double checked on the day of my section.

I had a scan on the day of my elcs to check position of breech & transverse twins.

Chelyanne · 16/07/2021 22:52

I would have gone vb if twin 1 had gone back to head down so maybe that was why they did it.

Thanks everyone 😊 just wasn’t sure whether they’d need to know where he was before cutting me open! Will see what the midwife says first

It might depend on trust. I had an ELCS and was scanned the morning of. We knew he was breech and couldn't turn- they said it was just to check his position to be prepared. Good luck with your section ☺️

@yellowspot thank you 😊 mine is already for the placenta but they have scanned it a lot so far, thinking I might end up with multiple reasons though 😂
