Difficulties obtaining a fit to fly note for pregnancy

Hello!

I see "fit to fly" pregnancy notes as a bit of a gimmick needed for insurance purposes, and also think they unnecessarily discriminate women.

However, regardless, I of course wanted to comply with the regulations and ensure I had one for when I fly at 29 weeks pregnant, with uncomplicated/straightforward pregnancy so far and no known risk factors. I started the process with my GP practice WELL in advance, but still don't have the note. Now, a week before my planned travel, I was told, contrary to previous information shared MULTIPLE times ("you don't need an appointment", "the fee is 30 pounds", "send an email with your details", "the doctor will look at it tonight") that they don't even do fit to fly notes for pregnancy at all.

Side note: GP office told to me go to a travel clinic who, when called, laughed and said they never do or did issue fit to fly notes.

Now, I'm pursuing other routes still, but hypothetically, what happens if I turn up at the gate and if asked say I'm say 25 weeks pregnant (the fit to fly note is required from 28th week)??

The rebel in me wants to try it even if I do manage to secure a fit to fly note...

The best person to assess fitness to fly is your midwife or your obstetrician.

There is a reason why they want a qualified person to do and it isnt as easy as just signing a letter.

Unfortunately GP's aren't really qualified to do these especially as they aren't the ones monitoring you during your pregnancy.
There are private GP's who provide these services if needed.

Thanks Souther! Unfortunately, my midwife and hospital direct me to my GP. In the past I also got fit to fly note from the same GP.

Yeah, this is private work so most NHS GPs, obstetricians and midwives won't do them (or at least shouldn't - they aren't insured to do them).

Your best bet is to try going through a private GP.

I flew (very short domestic flight) very late in my third trimester. I just wore a big coat and looked very fat, so no one even realised I was pregnant. Wouldn't do it to go to another country/where you need medical insurance though.

My midwife did mine for me as she said she would do it quickly and for free while the GP would charge me for it and it would take ages. It doesn't need to be anything fancy, I think it just needs your due date and that they believe you are fine to fly. Maybe speak to midwife and explain the issues you are having and see if they will just write a quick note for you
