How to turn OP baby to AP

I'm due to go in for an induction next Friday and found out my baby is in a back to back position, I've read some horrifying stories about birthing when baby is in this position. I was hoping for an unmedicated birth. Has anyone ever been able to successfully turn their back to back baby to an anterior position through exercises etc before labour, please share any helpful or successful stories, thank you

No success, he was huge, but they say to avoid lying down

I spent the last 4 weeks on all fours trying to turn my back to back baby because I’d read (pre home internet days) in a magazine that it helped. It didn’t work. I had an unmedicated birth-I wouldn’t advise it.

Unfortunately if the baby is that way it's difficult to turn them if they're comfortable. Look at the spinning babies website, they have some useful tips, but they may not work.

I had an unmedicated back to back birth (not my intention). Don't do it if you have the choice. The rest of labour was fine, that bit was something else.

I've been on my all 4s for the last hour because that can help change position, feel my baby may have moved to the correct position, if it has, is there a chance it could move back to the old position again

Our 3rd was back to back, only a few pushes to get her out, she was 9lb 10oz with 37.7cm head. I delivered on my back dropped the g&a when they broke my waters and didn't use it again as it was only 11 mins to delivery. I did tear from v2a but not a big deal really.

Honestly nothing worked for me. I tried everything.

Qasidy · 16/07/2021 13:03

@Moorelewis Did you try the exercises from before you went into labour ?

@Qasidy yes with both of my DC. Both c sections in the end. I honestly believe some women are just more prone to having babies that are back to back! It's not as if I wasn't exercising or I sat on the sofa like some sources suggest. I was walking long distances up to 41 weeks.

I tried the exercises with my birthing ball and went into labour whilst trying to turn him, they didn’t make a difference to his position at all. Mine was with just gas and air but I hadn’t heard any of the horror stories beforehand so I just went with the flow. At the transitional stage I would happily have taken an epidural but was too late so just had to go with it and fortunately it was fairly quick (luckily no tear either). If it’s an epidural you want to avoid you could try pethadine as well as gas and air and a birthing pool maybe?

I didn’t know beforehand so didn’t try any exercises, other than generally trying to avoid positions which can lead to OP throughout pregnancy, but had a completely unmedicated water birth with DS who was OP and 9lb9.

Based on how that felt I think my earlier DD may also have been OP during labour but no-one told me if so. She was also born in the pool, just shy of 8lb. I had a couple of paracetamol in the early stages both times and did find that all my contractions were in my back, which was not what I expected at all.

If the position is still OP when giving birth, would you say giving birth on all fours makes the pain less on your back giving that your taking pressure off your back by leaning forward?

A lot of posterior babies turn during labour they arent necessarily delivered posterior. All my babies were posterior, none engaged pre labour (prob because of posterior presentation), but all turned and engaged during labour and i never felt labour in my back. All normal deliveries. Agree with pp to try not end up lying on your back but i think thats good advice for labour generally. Stsy upright and add movement if you can, it will help baby to turn.
