NIPT?

These weren’t available last time I was pregnant. I have a few questions:

What does it tell you that the 12 week bloods don’t?
What made you decide to have it done?
Is it worth the money?
When to have it done?

Thanks x

We opted for a private NIPT (at 13 weeks) in conjunction with the standard NHS bloods at 12 weeks, we just wanted a belt and braces approach following a number of miscarriages.

NIPT is significantly more accurate than the NHS bloods and tests for the following conditions:

  • Trisomy 21 (Down's Syndrome)
  • Trisomy 18 (Edward's Syndrome)
  • Trisomy 13 (Patau's Syndrome)
  • A number of sex chromosome abnormalities

You can also find out the sex of the baby, if you want.

We paid £595 for our NIPT and a pre-blood draw ultrasound with an Obstetric consultant. The results came back within 10 days and we had a meeting with the Consultant to run through them.

I didnt pay for a private one so slightly different but did have it on the NHS two weeks ago after the screening tests I'd had alongside my scan came back with high risk chances.

The consultant that spoke to me about those results explained that the NIPT (only offered on NHS since 1st June) is much more accurate than the screening tests they offer. So offered me that or the chance to refer straight to amnio. I opted for nipt first as amnio scared me a bit too much.

The nipt came back as very low chance ans clear of everything. Only thing is, which I didn't realise at the time, although they can tell the gender the NHS hospital I was at had a policy not to tell me. The results came back in about 5 working days.

Narwhalsh · 16/07/2021 07:37

My NIPT results were very very very much lower risk numbers than the NHS screening, particularly the Downs Syndrome risk which for the NHS screening takes your age as a big multiplier (so if you are in your latter 30s or older you might find this being a worryingly high risk number with the NHS results). You also get sex of the baby as an optional result

HayB · 16/07/2021 08:19

We opted for it due to:

My age this time around - likely my Nhs screening results would have come back high chance - therefore we would have had to opt for further tests anyway.

Speed - I didn’t want to wait for NHS results and then have to wait for possible further results.

It’s expensive but 💯 worth it for peace of mind. We didn’t connect with the pregnancy until we knew results and then shared news with close family and friends.
When I had mine done, it was a thorough scan, bloods and got it back within 1 week. 😃

ivfgottwins · 16/07/2021 08:33

I did it because

I was 37
It was twins via IVF
Multiple previous miscarriages
Previously did genetic testing of IVF embryos and all came back with chromosome issues but the 2 I transferred I hadn't tested

Redpanda21 · 16/07/2021 21:27

Thank you all for your insight.

Given that I’m nearly 37 and had 4 miscarriages and a mmc blighted ovum in the last 2 years I think I’ll get it done x

Just reading through these comments and agree “not connecting with the pregnancy “
I have nuchal translucency of 3.7, I’m 35 and got a 1/51 chance of baby having DS.
Opted for NIPT and waiting on results(it’s been a week)
So stressed and anxious…it’s all I think about :(

Oogah · 21/07/2021 17:06

I had it done due to my age and also when I went for my 12 weeks scan the baby would not get into the correct position for them to take any measurements.
It was well worth the money and had the results back within 5 days showing a very low risk

Clarkey86 · 21/07/2021 19:50

I’m 34 and my nuchal scan result came back as 1 in 187 when my first pregnancy it was 1 in 10,000.

It panicked me so I got a NIPT and it’s now 1 in 45,000 or something similar.

The NIPT is a totally different test - they extract baby’s DNA from your blood and look for the chromosomes. It’s super accurate but not technically diagnostic so they still have to class it as a risk assessment, but it is so much more accurate than the NHS nuchal screen.

Rachelg607 · 22/07/2021 20:00

Hi all

I'm 37 and have been given a 1:26 chance of downs syndrome. Has anybody else had similar to this and had a negative NIPT result?

I was unable to have the CVS this week, although was still undecided about it, because I am self isolating and am now 14 weeks.

I had NT 3.3
HGC 2.3
PAPP-A 1.4

I'm so worried as I have two children already and have been longing for a third. We had a miscarriage in October and I also lost my dad suddenly in November. I just don't feel like anything is going right at the moment.

I would love to hear yours view's and experiences. Xx

Rachelg607 · 22/07/2021 20:05

So sorry you going through this too. Have you had your results today?

VanillaSpiceCandle · 22/07/2021 20:17

I had it done privately at 12 weeks primarily because the baby wasn’t in the right position at my NHS scan. I’m still quite shocked and angry I wasn’t offered another and just a blood test a week later which could only check for Downs not Edwards or Pataus which are obviously much more serious.

I was considering it because it’s an IVF pregnancy and although I’ve never suffered from anxiety before I do feel very anxious. It was very easy and I like that there was no risk to the baby.

VanillaSpiceCandle · 22/07/2021 20:18

I should have been clearer. The baby wasn’t in the right position so the somographer couldn’t give me any information at all on any conditions or risk levels.

Nixxie33 · 01/08/2021 13:51

@Emmalizzie831 I’m in the same boat - did all turn out fine your side?

Nixxie33 · 01/08/2021 13:58

@Rachelg607 hardest time - where I live it take 10 workings days as it needs to be flown to another city- It’s bizarre. I believe us ladies in their 30s screw up the screening numbers I am 1:14 for T21 and 1:80 for T18 - nasel bone showed - another 6 working days to go - the wait is horrible
Hoping you came out strong - and hoping all went well. We all in this together

Worried1991 · 01/08/2021 20:46

What where your readings from screening test?

Nixxie33 · 02/08/2021 07:12

@Worried1991 mine was 1:14 for T21 and 1:80 for T18
NT was at 2.87. I’m 33 first pregnancy. Waiting on the NIPT results.

Emmalizzie831 · 02/08/2021 12:20

Yes I went for NIPT came back low risk!!
😃😃😃
The consultant wanted me to get another scan them, just have a look at the baby’s heart, I am going tomorrow and I will be 17 1/2 weeks xx

Worried1991 · 03/08/2021 07:29

@Nixxie33 waiting for mine now nt was 2.2m but my hcg was 5 mom
