Congratulations and welcome to MN!

Not sure what the current advice is but just wanted to say hi.

From when I was pregnant 4 years ago, it was not pate (it has liver/too much vit A), not peanuts, no soft cheeses, no bags of salad leaves unless you wash them thoroughly and not too much tuna.

Somebody else will come a long with a more comprehensive list if they haven't already.

I think niecie has just about covered it. No alcohol, although the odd glass of wine shouldn't cause a problem.

Also be aware that you should take paracetamol for headaches etc, but not ibuprofen.

Oh, and welcome and congratulations!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! i've just recently had my first baby and from what i remember here's the list (though i have to say by the end of my pg i id occassionally as i have a friend in france who had no sch warnings over food and drink (just advice to stay clear of cats cos of toxoplasmosis! - we have to beware too, but no such advice in the UK))

no pate which contains any offal, such as liver - too much vitamin A can cause defects
no unpasteurised cheese - risk of listeria
no shark - too much mercury
only 2 cans tuna per wee - too much mercury
no peanuts - can cause allergies in child if parents are prone to allergies (much debate about this, and i chose to eat peanuts, but i'm just telling you the recommendations )
no shellfish - food poisoning risk
limited alcohol - fetal alcohol syndrome (and other problems recently reported in news - was it ADHD or something?)
wah fruit/veg in case of pesticides
limit caffeine intake
and check medicine packs for whether you can take them

think thats it!!! enjoy your pg. everyone said this to me, althoug i hated everything about pg (except my baby of course!) but really wish now that i had enjoyed it. feel quite - though not quite enough to actually have another just yet!!

It's different in every country.

But you can add raw fish to the above, think thats kinda obvious though

Sushipaws · 25/11/2007 17:38

Oh and forgot to say CONGRATULATIONS.

I ate shellfish, my doctor told me it was ok if I got it from a trusted source.

The main thing is to watch any drugs (prescribed or otherwise) you take - most foods aren't going to have a big effect on you unless you eat loads (in the case of pate etc) or food that would give you food poisoning anyway. Common sense should apply in my opinion. (this is from someone who's eaten half her body weight in brie this afternoon - it's never given me listeria previously, and if I did get food poisoning, the risk to my baby would be from dehydration, which can be rectified as long as I keep an eye on it)

You should really start taking a folic acid supplement, and will probably find that taking a pre-natal multivitamin will keep your other vits and iron up.
