Dehydration caused false contractions and high fetal heart rate. Just warning you ladies

Hi guys,

Just wanted to share what happened to me today and as the weather is getting warm here in the UK wanted to warn you pregnant ladies to keep drinking! I'm shocking at keeping hydrated 🤦🏻‍♀️

So Today was eventful... went for a consultant appt to discuss birth plan etc and she said let's monitor baby's heart rate. Turned out babys h/r was 170-180 which was on the high side. She wanted to be safe and sent me to get monitored in the delivery suite. They belted me up and baby boys h/r was going all over the place and he was moving so much! I was so worried! I did a urine test before she belted me up on the monitor and was told I was very dehydrated. She gave me a huge jug of water to get through whilst I was on the monitor. During this time, I started getting painful contractions starting in my back and coming towards my belly and I looked at the monitor and they were happening a lot! Because of this a DR was called in to check my cervix. Fortunately, cervix was closed! I was then told I needed to be checked again in 4 hrs. So in that time I drank so much water then I was checked again 4 hrs later and babys h/r was back to normal and contractions stopped (just the odd Braxton hicks) I'm now home in bed, teles on and I have a 2 litre bottle by my side!

So just wanted to share this for anyone who is rubbish like me at drinking water! Keep drinking especially during this crazy hot muggy weather! Dehydration can affect baby's h/r and for me it caused false contractions! I felt so guilty for making my baby get that way :( ... so drink drink drink!

Of course if you're concerned at all about you or baby always call your delivery unit! Don't just think water will make it go away, but just wanted to stress how important it was to keep drinking!

I've now been told to monitor the pains and if they don't go by drinking lots of water then of course I have to go back in! But if I get tightenings and then drink water and they go then it's my body telling me I'm too dehydrated!

Xxx

How scary for you! Glad everything turned out ok. I've just poured myself a pint of water so thank you for the reminder 😊

This happened to me at 35 weeks after a tummy bug. I was admitted and put on a drip. Contractions eased off once I was properly hydrated again. Glad you and baby are ok op!

lukiebebe · 13/07/2021 20:25

@JackJack84 yes quite frightening! Although they said 35 weeks is okay and baby will be okay if he comes .. I was still like but I'm so not prepared lol!

Haha you're welcome! Enjoy your fresh pint of water! How many weeks are you? Xx

@nervousseacreature oh did it! Gosh! Glad all went okay after being hydrated.

I know drinking water is so important but didn't realise I was that badly dehydrated 🤦🏻‍♀️ and it could cause that! I feel so bad.

I find drinking water so hard! Too much of it makes me feel sick! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Glad you’re OK now.

I got dehydrated a few weeks ago and ended up at the GP the next day because I felt so ill (I also had a UTI and general pregnancy). I’m only 19 weeks so didn’t have false contractions, thankfully. It’s so hard at the minute because not only do you have to drink more anyway being pregnant but you can’t refill your water bottle due to covid, nobody will handle your bottle. I’ve been taking 3 water bottles with me (part of my job involves going out on site, in all weathers). Carrying close to 2L of water in your handbag/backpack gets quite heavy though. Especially as I’ve only just got past the stage where I don't need to take snacks with me to stop the nausea. So I’ve also been taking fruit with a high water content out with me, or stopping a supermarket to pick some up.

@InTheNightWeWillWish oh gosh bless you! UTIs are awful!

Yes COVID just messes everything up for us! Good idea about the fruits! I hope whilst the weather is warm atm that you can keep hydrated and no more UTIs come you're way! Xx

@lukiebebe I'm 21 weeks & dreading this heatwave, I don't like the heat at the best of times 😂

Gosh thanks for this post. I'm so crap
At drinking water and keeping hydrated. Will definitely make more of a conscious effort now.
