Hi all...
Has anyone had a GTT after 28 weeks? I've been referred for one due to my BMI at booking in. I don't think I'm extremely overweight and not had any symptoms that there could be a sign of GD I'm just thinking it's being done as a precaution. My appointment will be when I'm 30 weeks. I've been reading online that the GTT is done usually between 24-28 weeks. Will it matter that I will be 30 weeks?

While I think it is usually more standard to be done at 28 weeks (mine was), since being diagnosed with Gestational diabetes I’ve spoken to plenty of ladies who were tested at 30-32 weeks, so perhaps some trusts are slightly different.

I totally hadn’t expected to be diagnosed. I was referred also due to my bmi at booking (mine was 30 so just on the cut off).

Thank you for the reply...yes my BMI was 31 at booking.

If you don't mind me asking, what happens if you are diagnosed with GD? What changes do you have to make? Did you have any signs/symptoms?

Yes. I had 2 GTT's in my 2nd term pregnancy. Every woman in our area was offered it in the 2nd trimester and mine came back within normal ranges. I had a growth scan at 28wk and he was 4 weeks ahead on growth so they ordered a repeat test which also came back normal. I've had them in all pregnancies since then but usually around 26wk, all been bigger babies but no GD.

I have just had mine at 26 weeks due to my bmi, it’s a precaution thing at my trust if over a certain bmi, I had to have it in last pregnancy too but think that was a little later on at 28 weeks. They did it at 26 weeks as that was when they could fit it in, I do t think it matters when as the nurse said to me it’s usually later when gd shows anyway. Im sure my friend was referred for it at like 34 weeks due to symptoms they were having. Xx

@penguin7 well so far, since my diagnosis, I’ve picked up a blood glucose testing kit, I be had 2 telephone appointments, one with a specialist diabetes nurse who talked me through what GD is, why women get it, what the risks are etc, I have to test my levels 4 times a day and it all syncs to an app on my phone. The readings are monitored by the nurses. If I have several higher than target readings I will be put on metformin and likely insulin. So far my fasting readings first thing in the morning are the ones that are high. But I’ve been told that those are the hardest to bring under control as they aren’t diet controlled. So it’s looking likely I will be starting metformin this week.
I then had a call with a diabetes dietician who talked through how to pair foods, what I should be avoiding etc. But tbh since the diagnosis I’d done so much research online that I already knew all of it.
Basically I have to cut out sugars like sweets, chocolate, cake etc, as you’d expect, but actually the biggest problem is carbs. Every carb has to be paired with plenty of protein and fat to enable your body to tolerate it.

I had no symptoms beforehand of GD, like I said, I hadn’t expected to get a positive result at all.
