Morning sickness nausea…

I am a first time expecting mum and I must say that this morning sickness is crazy! I haven’t thrown up or anything yet but I have nausea quite bad. I have been eating normally as best I can and I drink a lot of water. I have a phobia of being sick which isn’t great as it usually comes with being pregnant, however, if I continue eating well and drinking, do you think I can control my nausea to the point where I don’t need to throw up? Has anyone else managed to control their morning sickness and not throw up?

I am also getting the odd cramping every now and then, is that classed as normal? I’m not spotting or anything like that. I’m just getting cramping, feeling sick, headaches quite often and being very tired!

I’m 7 weeks pregnant! I know it’s usually 12-13 weeks where people start to feel better and I’m still another 5/6 weeks off which is daunting!

I can’t wait to hear from you guys and see if we have anything in common! X

Hey, I made it through my first pregnancy without vomming despite intense all-day nausea weeks 6-14. I also have a phobia of throwing up, so maybe I just mentally ruled it out. I did end up dry heaving once, but never felt like it was actually going to happen.

I am currently 6 weeks into my second pregnancy and it's just as awful as last time. Just gritting my teeth for the next 2 months, so if you need someone to commiserate with, I'm here!

P.s. the random cramping is usually normal, just another joyous side effect. Second trimester is much better, I promise!

Congratulations! I feel for you, it's no fun. With my first I had nausea but wasn't sick and started feeling better around 13 weeks, but with my current I had it badly until 22 weeks with sickness every day and I don't think I did anything differently! Have you tried the anti sickness wrist bands? Some people swear by them, and peppermint tea. I found a fizzy drink helped first time round and also eating lots of crackers, but second time round literally nothing :( I hope you can find something that works for you! Good luck!

My morning sickness was pretty bad as well - at its peak, I was sick 5 times in a single morning. It basically felt like my organs were trying to chuck themselves out. I tried everything from prescribed anti-nausea medication (but it made me extremely drowsy so couldn't get anything done) and generally recommended remedies like ginger tea, sweets, nibbling on biscuits instead of having full meals etc.

Frankly, none of it was really a huge help. I was still sick multiple times a day. The one thing that finally made it manageable was using anti-nausea wristbands that basically press on an acupressure point near the wrist. That was transformational. One day, I was struggling to keep food and liquids down, the next day, with the wristband I was only sick once. Didn't take the nausea away completely but I was actually able to go about with my day and felt much more like a human being and with no side effects like drowsiness.

I had nausea but wasn’t sick, just gagged sometimes eg when cleaning teeth. Congrats and good luck.

Mimi1996 · 09/07/2021 22:34

@Shortmamashortcycles we are one in the same being scared to throw up! Maybe because I’m the same way, ruling it out, maybe that’s why it hasn’t happened? Sometimes I do feel like I’m going to Chuck though, I have these burps which make me feel like it’s Coming but never does!

@LittleCatDog I have got the wristbands but totally forgot about them, I’ll try wearing them and see if they make a difference!

@pileapetals I’ll try the bands and if not I’ll go to the doctor and see what they can suggest medication wise. I’m just trying to go one day at a time but it is daunting with such a long time ahead of me before the sickness wears off 🤦🏽‍♀️

@wishing3 I haven’t had that yet with the brushing teeth but I hear a lot of people are the same as you! Have you been triggered by any smells?

I had horrific nausea in both pregnancies but was never sick. My advice is to take it one day at a time. It doesn't feel like it now, but one day you will look back and this will feel like a pin prick of time in your life.

I was hungry and denied myself nothing. Three hot meals a day - my body was demanding calories and it helped with the nausea.

Also, rest as much as possible. Tiredness worsens nausea significantly.

It's so so shit, but you will get through this.

Good luck Thanks

Santanomore · 09/07/2021 22:39

I found eating more helped the nausea. Especially lots of plain, beige food.

Shortmamashortcycles · 09/07/2021 22:42

@Mimi1996, hah yeah we're clearly the same - gotta love those sicky burps!

I just remembered that I had to use kids strawberry toothpaste for a month because I couldn't cope with the minty aftertaste argh... why did I sign up for this a second time? 🤣

Mimi1996 · 09/07/2021 22:46

@Shortmamashortcycles I am not liking the aftertaste or my toothpaste tbf, I may have to switch mine up with something a little less strong haha!

I said to my partner one child may be enough, not sure I can go through this part of pregnancy again so you are a trooper going through your second!

@Stringervest I am trying to think positive and to think of the bigger picture! It’s good you are still managing to eat your meals, I am able as well but sometimes I do have to force myself because I just don’t feel like eating but I’ll know I will feel better for it after!

I don't think not wanting to vomit has much of a bearing...i had a phobia/bad fear of vomiting and have vomited 100's of times with this pregnancy... still makes me cry!! But anti emetics helped me greatly, plus eating asap when nauseous- I've had emergency snacks everywhere i go for months now!
Some people only get the nausea part and never vomit, and obviously some people get neither... but how you feel about it sadly doesn't control it!!

Alfxn · 09/07/2021 23:01

Just reread my post and didn't mean to sound negative or scare you OP, sorry! The thing is, it is only for a period of time, it will get better and it will be so worth it for all of us in the end. If you start really struggling don't be afraid to ask for antiemetics- there are loads of safe options for pregnancy these days so no need for women to suffer any more! Congrats and all the best.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 09/07/2021 23:24

unless you take anti-emetics then no, morning sickness isn't something you can ultimately control.

you can take certain measures (with DD I needed to drink alcohol-free beer to reduce the nausea), but you can't make it go away.

I was sick the whole way through with 3 of my pgs - despite having big babies my pre-pg weight was more than at 40 w pg!
trust me, if I could've done something to not throw up 5 times a day I would've!

with DS3 I used drink Fanta - I realised if stuff comes up it might as well taste sweet🤷‍♀️🤣

it's a pretty rubbish part of being pg.
hopefully the worst is over by end of 1st trimester. best of luck

@Mimi1996

I said to my partner one child may be enough

Haha I didn't say this to my partner but I've definitely thought it a few times during the roughest period! But now that I'm past it I think I can entertain the thought again :) Just hang in there! Take it one day at a time - I was dreading the days thinking it would last all the way to week 12-14. But in my case the nausea just lasted 4 weeks total and stopped at week 9. Others have it much longer and it just varies so much. One day at a time. You can do it!

Taenia · 10/07/2021 08:59

I went from feeling sick to being really sick from 9 weeks its just starting to settle a but now at 17 weeks.

I did find though that the main issue for me was being hungry or not having anything in my stomach so having biscuits or some type of snack with me at all times helped and as soon as I felt a twinge of nausea intensify I'd have a biscuit... even if it was every 30mins or so. It was hard as had lots of food aversions in first trimester too and never fancied food. Even had biscuits next to bed. Stayed away from anything strongly smelling as things that set me off would change frequently.

Starting to get better now though. Still need to biscuits but no way near as often as I did and can eat proper meals again now although smaller portions.

I found tiredness made the situation worse so made sure I rested as much as possible as did being thirsty. So always had water on the go.

Hold in there. It will be better x
