Pregnant after implant removal

I feel the need to vent!
I had my implant removed last month due to hormonal issues and wanting to let my body regain balance before we ttc in the next couple of years.
At no point did anyone mention to me that we needed to use protection the week prior to removal and at the removal appointment I mentioned that we didn't want to try for at least another year. There was no question of 'did you use protection last week' even then.
I'm sure you all know where this is heading but this morning I had a positive pregnancy test!
We have devided to continue but have very mixed feelings. I have recently started a new job and so am entitled to no maternity (as far as I know), but mostly this will be a very high risk pregnancy due to medication and an existing medical condition.
Anyone else had a similar situation? I'm so cross!

What method of protection did you start using immediately after having the implant removed?

MM1993 · 06/07/2021 23:27

I got pregnant 2 weeks after implant removal, it wasn't planned however I was told at my appointment that I was no longer protected once it was removed, there is no grace period etc.

I was not told I needed to use protection prior to its removal. They last 3 years however you can be covered for up to 4 years, this guidance was from the NHS as during the peak of COVID things such as implant removal were suspended so they had to reassure people they were still covered.
Therefore if your implant had expired, you wouldn't have got pregnant from sex you had the week prior to its removal, it would be from sex you had immediately afterwards. The implant doesn't just instantly stop working the day it expires.

SleepTalk · 07/07/2021 08:34

I had it removed after 2 years so there was no concern it had expired and we immediately started to use condoms.
I'm so confused. I have done another 3 tests since and all negative. The first was a clearblue digital and the others the clearblue weeks indicator. I dont take any hcg containing meds and as far as I know dont have a condition likely to cause a false positive. What is the likelihood the first test was wrong?

... just to add to previous post - they did tell me I wasnt covered from the instant I had it removed an we have been so careful (using condoms and checking them after use) that it cant possibly be from sex after removal. Confused

If it hadn't expired why would they need to warn you to use another form of contraception the week before it was removed?. The implant didn't know it was going to come out?!

wishingitwasfriday · 07/07/2021 08:42

If it hadn't expired then it must have been a condom failure after you had the implant removed.

TooManyAnimals94 · 07/07/2021 08:44

I'm assuming it's because sperm can live in the body for a few days.
SleepTalk · 07/07/2021 13:19

It is because sperm can apparently live inside the body for upto 5 days!
I think this thread is sort of proving my point, that this isnt common enough knowledge for them to make the assumption that you should know this and therefore know the use additional protection in the week prior to removal.

How likely is that considering you were on hormonal contraception during this time? Conditions must be favourable for sperm to survive for that long and doesn't the implant prevent ovulation so therefore your internal conditions are non-fertile? I'm going to go out on a limb here and say it's more likely a condom failure than negligence on the part of hcp.

Elune · 07/07/2021 13:52

So you aren't pregnant? If the first was a digital then there's always a slight chance it could have been wrong, as with anything involving technology! If all the rest were negative and still are then I would assume that was the case. I think it would be incredibly unlikely to become pregnant from sex prior to implant removal.

Elune · 07/07/2021 13:54

(Not impossible because yes the sperm can live for five days or so and the implant may not have suppressed ovulation, but it would have to be the Swiss cheese thing of lots of small holes lining up to make it happen. And given you have had several negative tests subsequently, it suggests you aren't pregnant.)

SillyBry · 07/07/2021 14:58

I was never advised this either... but as a previous poster has said, the implant is actually effect for way longer than they let you keep it in. Mine was due out mid-pandemic last year and they told me it couldn't be taken out due to Covid, but I would be safe for at least another year.

I have fallen pregnant super quickly after having the implant removed twice though - so once it's out of your body, it's done, so I guess there is a minute risk that sperm could live in your body in the days before it was taken out... I've never really thought of it.

One word of caution - please do mention that you think you fell pregnant with the implant in and push them to check it's not ectopic. The risk of ectopic pregnancy is much higher if you're using hormonal contraception.

30degreesandmeltinghere · 07/07/2021 15:02

I had a dc 9 months and 10 days post removal... Shocker!!

mummyh2016 · 07/07/2021 16:02

If you had it removed a month ago and that is when you conceived you would be around 6 weeks pregnant but that doesn't sound right if you have had some negative tests? You're either not pregnant, or if you are have only recently conceived if you aren't getting strong positives. Have you tried a frer?

SleepTalk · 09/07/2021 10:49

Waiting on a blood test from the doc. Spoke to a friend last night who is a nurse. She said it is definitely possible and the definitely should have advise other forms of protection the week before the implant came out.
If I ovulated the day the implant came out I figured out this morning I should get my AF. Might explain the negative tests. Either way I'll know soon enough.

I had one in that I'd had for about 6 years (...its a long story why it wasn't removed earlier). So when I had it taken out I assumed it was already not working so there would be no reason why I would conceive straight away. I was pregnant 4 weeks later.

Turns out they actually now think the implant can last up to 7 words in certain circumstances.

penny92 · 09/07/2021 11:11

7 years not words! Currently 15 weeks pregnant with twins, hence the baby brain!

You don't need to use protection before removal. That is only for the coil. I have removed hundreds of implants.

Your friend is wrong.

Turns out I was pregnant for a very short while. It was a chemical pregnancy.
