Did I hurt my baby by jumping from a wall?

Hey,

this might seem like a stupid question, but I can't stop worrying.

Today my neighbour invited me over. When I go over to theirs I don't use the front door, but climb over the wall that separates our gardens.

I totally forgot I was 5 1/2 weeks pregnant and that I have to be careful. I jumped from a wall that's about 60 to 80 cm high on the hard ground with my 11 month old baby in my arms as this is what I always do.

Only when I hit the ground I remembered that I was pregnant and that jumps can cause miscarriage and I feel so stupid and have been feeling awful ever since.

I attached a picture of the wall.

Can anyone put my mind at ease? xx

Jumps absolutely can NOT cause miscarriages. Where on earth did you pick that up?

Miscarriages are overwhelmingly caused by embryos that were never genetically viable. About the only thing that can shift a healthy pregnancy is powerful abortifacient drugs.

Think about it sensibly. If jumping off a really not that high wall could cause a miscarriage, why on earth would we need abortion procedures?

Carrotgarrotte · 04/07/2021 20:47

A 5 week old embryo is TINY. No need to worry. Truly.

Everydayisawindingroad · 04/07/2021 20:47

You have not put your pregnancy at risk, in fact the greatest danger was tripping and landing on your 11 month old baby. Do you normally suffer from anxiety or is it pregnancy that causes your panic? For what it’s worth I was upset that I bumped the pram down a step with newborn dc1 and I was convinced I’d caused irreparable damage, so I can relate. Hugs 🤗

@BuffySummersReportingforSanity

I read that you should avoid strenuous, high intensity exercise that includes jumps during pregnancy, as it could cause miscarriage.

I know I'm probably silly, but it just makes you worry.

Take a look at these pics. She's been competing in a sport much more strenuous than jumping off a low wall and is having a healthy pregnancy.

You and your baby will be fine. Many many people don't even know they're pregnant at 6weeks and carry on life as normal.

Spudlet · 04/07/2021 20:51

You have absolutely not hurt your baby Flowers

Well I don't know where you read that. But it sounds like garbage.

Women work out strenuously in early pregnancy all the time. You can't "shake an embryo loose". I dare say women have exercised strenuously and then miscarried, but in pretty much every case they would sadly have miscarried regardless... Because the pregnancy was never viable.

A healthy, viable pregnancy is incredibly resilient.

Spudlet · 04/07/2021 20:54

Strenuous high intensity exercise would be something like a HIIT class that left you in a heap - not one hop off a little wall.

www.nhs.uk/pregnancy/keeping-well/exercise/ NHS advice on exercise during pregnancy - nothing about miscarriage in there. It’s more that you might hurt yourself if you go bonkers. Just don’t take up BASE jumping or kickboxing and you should be fine.

Anon08 · 04/07/2021 20:55

I’ve been dismounting from my horses without issue and that’s significantly higher. I’m 15 weeks.

MissCrowley · 04/07/2021 20:55

When I was (unaware) pregnant, I was dancing and jumping off a cocktail bar higher than that absolutely rat arsed.
Your baby will be just fine.

Aardvarkitsabloodyaardvark · 04/07/2021 20:57

Try not to worry. I had a motorbike accident many years ago at 8 weeks pregnant. I was terrified that it would cause damage. The midwife told me that baby was so tiny and well protected inside that there was no need to worry.

When I was about that pregnant I went on an adrenaline high speed boat ride where you are flung all over the place and my baby was fine. Also when I was 8 months pregnant I was knocked over by a dog. He's a strapping 4 year old now.

Don't worry and don't wrap yourself in cotton wool. Just carry on as normal for now. In a few months you won't be able to see your feet. Be careful then!

PB12 · 04/07/2021 21:10

Thanks everyone, you put my mind at ease. I know I was being silly xx

Christ, I was skiing at 5 weeks pregnant 🤣

SillyBry · 04/07/2021 21:26

@Anon08 I’m 31 weeks and still hacking out a couple of times a week. 2 weeks ago, schooling became too much… and I now have to dismount back onto the mounting block as 17hh is a long way to scramble down with a watermelon belly 🤣🤣
I think my riding days are numbered now!!!

Anon08 · 05/07/2021 09:24

@SillyBry good for you! I felt so crap during the first trimester I hardly did anything. Hoping I can get a good few months of hacking in before hanging up my boots!

Thefaceofboe · 05/07/2021 10:22

You may be being silly op, but I sneezed at around 5 weeks and was adamant id hurt the baby Grin now I realise how silly it was.

Your baby will be fine Smile

claralara42 · 05/07/2021 10:26

Oh my god yes, nobody tells you about sneezing do they!? I sneezed laying down and oh my goodness the shooting pains across my abdomen. Never again!

Can I hijack for a second (sorry OP) and ask people who have had children if they had hot baths or went in hot tubs in early pregnancy?

I'm 5 weeks and I know that I sound like I'm taking the piss but I googled things to avoid and that came up.

My situation is a bit complex but I am worried that hot water has done bad things to the baby's development.

claralara42 · 06/07/2021 09:58

Yeah, loads of hot baths. Honestly, women have almost starved to death in famines, been in car crashes and natural disasters and still they produce healthy babies. It's pretty hard to damage a foetus, and a bath that's not too hot for you is not going to do anything at all. A hot tub isn't even ver hot!

There's actually a point to the advice about hot baths, saunas etc.

The embryo can't regulate its temperature. Most baths will be fine, of course. But you should avoid very hot baths, or places like saunas, where temperatures are high. There's a risk of neural tube defects.

However, it's all about risk evaluation and mitigation.

It's usually not necessary to go OTT about any specific risk & weigh it up based on your own situation eg I ran throughout 2 of my 3 pregnancies but I was well used to it & comfortable that I was unlikely to fall over etc

In my view, OP doesn't need to worry about jumping from a low wall causing m/c but should worry about the 11 mo she was carrying (if she actually jumped not just climbed over) or the chance of breaking her ankle which would make pregnancy so much harder.

Studies in MICE have found neural tube defects. IT's none proven for humans

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 06/07/2021 10:26

I've been avoiding strenuous exercise and jumping around too much, I'm 14 weeks, but only because I'm a lazy git, not because I'm pregnant!

InkieNecro · 06/07/2021 10:29

I was running until 7 or 8 months with my first as well as lifting weights and he was fine! I went to a concert when I was 8 weeks and could feel the vibrations in my jaw but again he was fine.

Don't worry too much, the guidelines are that you shouldn't do anything strenuous that you don't normally do.
