Covid vaccine 23 weeks?

MiamiMermaid · 04/07/2021 14:51

Hi all, sorry to bring another covid thread!

I am completely torn about whether to have the vaccine. I’m 29, just over 23 weeks. Always was set on not having it due to the uncertainty but now restrictions are starting to lift (and looking like they’ll only continue to lift even more) I’m getting so worried about it.

I run events for 100+ people and cannot really socially distance. My company have said I won’t need to be doing the events after 28 weeks but that isn’t until August.

I’m petrified I’ll catch covid between now and then and put my baby at even more risk than if I’d had the vaccine in the first place 😫.

Not sure what I’m looking for really, anyone got any advice or experiences to share? I’m completely torn on what to do! TIA

My advice would be to look at the (very few) known risks from the vaccine vs the (potentially very serious) known risks from Covid, and discuss with your midwife. Cases of Covid are likely to spike and the majority of people getting seriously affected, hospitalised or even dying are people who have not been vaccinated yet.

StylishMummy · 04/07/2021 15:34

Covid is most dangerous to pregnant women in their final trimester, so I would absolutely take the vaccine. Babies are being born to vaccinated mothers with no ill effects

Narwhalsh · 04/07/2021 15:46

Had my 1st vaccine at 15 weeks and due #2 at 23 weeks is a couple of weeks time. Had no hesitations about it-have 2 other kiddies and cannot risk getting ill and needing to look after them too! It was Pfizer which I believe is the standard for under 40s/pregnant women. What are you worried about with the vaccine?

pbdr · 04/07/2021 15:52

I would without a doubt go for the vaccine. There is plenty of safety data now showing that the vaccine is very safe for pregnant women and babies. There is also increasing evidence showing the dangers of catching Covid, especially in the third trimester.
Plus, if you get it during pregnancy your baby should get some antibodies which will help protect them when they are tiny before they have much of an immune system.

Naisemayo · 04/07/2021 16:29

Hi, I was very hesitant like you and received a letter for the vaccine about 2 weeks ago and still was unsure. I am now 26 weeks and have caught covid from my students (I work in a secondary school), luckily so far I just have flu-like symptoms (so not feeling the best but not ‘dying’ either) but when I found out my test was positive I burst into tears and I honestly think it might be safer to get the jab. My partner got his and is testing everyday since I found out and has so far been negative and has zero symptoms.
I know it’s scary because of the baby, it’s up to you of course but as said before possible covid complications seem worse than the vaccine ones.
Hope this helps, I know it’s a really hard decision! Do discuss it with your midwife! Xxx

I'd wait babys are being born safe but there's nothing to say down the line of them getting older it may affect them no it's just too new in my opinion, it's completely up to you but I was told by my ivf consultants I wasn't aloud to have it 3 month prior to treatment or during pregnancy . Look into the data of pregnancy and covid and discuss it with your midwife and have a good think about it before you make your decision. I had covid twice last year and it was nothing, I'm now pregnant and I've had the common cold this week and it has made me ill I'd of much rather had the covid again.

Mrsmujic · 04/07/2021 18:02

I'm 7 or 8 weeks (apps all say one or the other?!) I have a hab booked for this Tuesday and pretty nervous if I should have it or not.. I've not spoken to a midwife yet as my First appointment is after the jab 😔

SouthwestSis · 04/07/2021 18:07

I would definitely get started with having your first jab, covid can make you seriously ill in the third trimester, can land you in hospital, or worse having to have your baby delivered prematurely.
It takes time for the antibodies to build after the first jab so the sooner you get it the better and be very careful where you go in the next few weeks and who you are mixing with indoors as cases are rocketing.
Had my first jab in first trimester and getting my second in about 10 days.

Mrsmujic · 04/07/2021 18:22

@SouthwestSis thanks, I know it's totally ridiculous but I'm so worried that it might make me miscarry (I know there's no evidence etc) just been trying so long to get pregnant that I don't wanna put it at risk if possible. How many weeks did you have your 1st jab? X

Loki01 · 04/07/2021 18:22

I am a researcher working in vaccine research. I did my PhD in virology and I did have the Pfizer vaccine at around 21 weeks (I think).

SouthwestSis · 04/07/2021 18:34

@Mrsmujic thousands of pregnant women have now been vaccinated and had no problems in their pregnancies since so you can take comfort from that. I had my first jab when I was around 6 weeks

sophieanne22 · 05/07/2021 11:08

I have AZ before I was pregnant and now putting off second dose as I’m scared of the rare blood clots when pregnancy already puts you at more risk of them. Unsure what to do too but it’s overdue now

IndigoJam · 05/07/2021 11:19

I'm having twins and I had my first at 11 weeks. Two scans since then. Zero issues. Both are ahead of my dates. Should get my next one in about 4 weeks. Definitely should get it. I know someone who caught covid in 3rd trimester, she went into a coma and they had to deliver her baby. Vaccine vs covid then vaccine should win

Cap89 · 05/07/2021 11:26

You obviously have to weigh up the risks. If I was you, I would 100% be vaccinated. The known risks of Covid in pregnancy plus the likelihood of you being exposed in your job outweigh the unknown (and incredibly unlikely) risks to your baby. All data so far suggests the vaccine is safe for the foetus and scientists have said they can see no way at all that the vaccine could have long term effects on babies after birth. But obviously they cannot say this definitively as the children have not grown up yet.

Aquamarine1029 · 05/07/2021 11:32

My SIL almost died from covid. She got it at 35 weeks, had to have an emergency cs, and was unconscious on a ventilator for 6 weeks. She didn't even get to touch her baby until he was almost 3 months old, and her recovery has been extremely hard. Get the vaccine. Covid can be very dangerous to pregnant women.

Mumoftwo2021 · 05/07/2021 11:43

Everyone’s reasons will be different and not everyone ends up in hospital. Covid like the flu affects people In different ways, you find many people who are vulnerable catch the flu and it becomes pneumonia which is what kills them not the flu.
I am 36 weeks pregnant and haven’t had the flu jab nor the covid vaccine. I’m not happy with the short space of time it has been trialled, the fact that it has affected women’s periods worries me that women are going to have fertility problems, god knows what other things will arise.
As I said each to their own and only you know what is right for you x

cocomelonz · 05/07/2021 13:14

I had mine last week at 28 weeks. I was really unsure about getting it and burst into tears as soon as I arrived but they were so lovely and the nurse talked me through everything and really made me feel as ease getting it. There was absolutely no pressure and they said if I was unsure I could cancel and come back another time if I wanted.

Now I'm happy with my decision to get it and am going to try to bring my second jab forward as it's booked for my due date. Just do your research and do what's best for you don't let anyone make you feel bad about getting it or not getting it because it's such a tough decision!

Anon08 · 05/07/2021 14:49

I had my first jab (AZ) pre pregnancy. Initially I wasn’t planning on having my second jab whilst pregnant but then the study on getting covid whilst in your third trimester came out and the increased risks to mum and baby. Then the delta variant numbers started going up.

DH and I had a frank chat, baby can’t survive without me and the risks were increasing so I had my second AZ jab at 10 weeks. Currently 15 weeks and no issues.

Leonberger · 05/07/2021 15:08

I had mine at 23 weeks.
I really struggled making the decision but I didn’t want to end up in hospital in the third trimester so decided to go for it.
I also read some stories of babies being born with some Covid antibodies and I felt it would be worth it to try and stop either of us becoming seriously ill.
I think if I could work from home and had no contact I would feel safer not having it but as it is I have DH and myself both working with the public and also my other DC at school so no way to try and keep myself Covid free!

So far no side effects at all.

sophieanne22 · 06/07/2021 11:54

I’m the same as you but I was just worried about the blood clots. I think I’m going to just have to bit the bullet and go get my second. Problem is I’ve been getting migraines all the time so I know I’m going to spend the next month freaking out

DoctorBambino · 06/07/2021 13:00

I'm 10 weeks and definitely not getting the vaccine in my first trimester. To be honest I don't think there is enough evidence to say its safe at all and I am really reluctant to get it whilst pregnant.

However, as I'll be in my third trimester over the winter I might consider it, only if my work refuse to let me wfh during that time. I work in schools and with everyone's attitude being "I'm vaccinated so I don't give a shit about anyone else" and the government deciding to let covid infect kids coz they don't get so effected I'm really worried about going in to schools in my last trimester.

The thing is we don't even know if the vaccine will stop all the effects of covid on pregnancy e.g. preterm labour, pre-eclampsia etc. You can still get covid even when vaccinated so then I think why introduce an extra risk by having the vaccine!? I just want to stay safe at home away from the world until baby is safely here!
