Help! I have the most painful haemorrhoids since giving birth 6 days ago that just don’t seem to be shifting! I have been given 2 x ointments from the GP & lactulose but there’s been no signs of improvement. It’s getting me down as I feel like I’m missing the joy of these first few days… does anyone have any tips that actually worked for them to ease/get rid of the damn things?!

You never get rid of them but Proctosedyl ointment (or similar) stops the pain.

You can get them surgically removed if they are very bad.

I find they take ages to go down if I have a flare up. Patience is needed, and put that cream on as often as you can.
Don’t sit on the loo for any longer than you have to.

Actually the NHS won’t remove piles. I asked and my GP said they don’t do it any more. You’re stuck with them and just have to use cream.

NHS don't cover anything classed as a cosmetic treatment, you can go private

Are you in any way constipated? You need to be passing very very soft poo that basically takes no effort or straining to stop irritating the haemorrhoids.

Lactulose is a bit rubbish as a laxative - you want Movicol or one of the many Movicol look-a-likes available from the pharmacy.

Keep using the cream, and stool softener and drinking lots of water. Cloth wipes or washing after doing a poo can be more comfortable than toilet paper.
As soon as you can, start doing your pelvic floor exercises religiously. Shorty and long, fast and slow, front and back. Ask your midwife if you can have a referral to pelvic health to check that you're rebuilding all the muscle strength as often women only rebuild part of their pelvic floor muscles.
Having gone through exactly this myself two years ago I have to say it's amazing the difference it made.

I just used the germaloids cream. Helped massively.

It was so painful (I only had one small one) I ended up using the cream every couple of hours but it really made a difference.

Really feel for you, I used to think people were exaggerating about the pain but honestly the pain just radiated throughout my legs and lower back and it was only the size of a pea. It was horrific but after during the cream it got better after 3 days or so.

Sitting in a warm bath with salt after a bowel movement really helps. Not pregnancy related but I had a rectal abscess with fissures and fistulas and doing this really helped because it relaxed the muscle x
