Hi , i need some advice on getting an dental x-ray and possible extraction of a root candled wisdom tooth at 26 weeks .

Has anyone ever had one done ? is it safe ? has baby been safe/healthy after having one done?

Is there anyone here that has experienced this .

Does anyone here work in the dental care or radiology ?

No personal experience. I've just changed dentists and they said they wouldn't X-ray but it'd be acceptable in 3rd trimester.

They said it's one of those things that they say they can't do simply because no research has been done on the impact of pregnant people and unborn child as quite rightly pregnant people wouldn't want to risk it.

Believe it's routinely done for emergency situations and I'm sure I read someone here from a professional that the radiation or whatever is so minuscule that it couldn't cause any harm.

I had an X-ray done and part root canal. They said they would finish the rest once baby is here. I was in third trimester for X-ray.

Dhano21 · 03/07/2021 09:25

@Happy2be Is your baby born all healthy and well?

I had all my back teeth removed, root canals and fillings in pregnancy. I didn't have any x-rays but then I have a hypergag reflex and they can never do them anyway so it might not have been pregnancy as to why they didn't.
I was told essential work should be done - infection is dangerous for the baby.
Cosmetic work can wait.

Shootingstar11 · 03/07/2021 09:51

I had an X-ray and partial root canal
also as well as 2 rounds of antibiotics. It wasn’t ideal but the dentist had to see what was going on and the infection could have spread if I didn’t do anything putting baby at risk. Although not born yet very active and all checks have been good since. I had this done in 2nd trimester. The dentist reassured me that as the X-ray was focused on my face there was minimal risk involved, but they put off the second part of my root canal
as I would need several X-rays and they prefer to be cautious. I’d say if you’re in pain and at risk of infection go ahead.

Happy2be · 03/07/2021 11:25

Yes baby born and he's fit and healthy. No issues.

Dhano21 · 03/07/2021 13:42

@Shootingstar11 Hey if you don't mind can i ask how many weeks pregnant you are . Have you had a ultrasound sound done since you've had the scan done ?

Dental radiographs are a low dose, think 50g Brazil nuts or a one way flight to Spain.
The uterus isn’t in the line of the beam. So they are very safe.
Are you in pain or experiencing any infection? If yes the benefits to you and your baby outweigh the risks.
If it can be left without any risk of pain or infection until after the baby is born then do so if you’d feel happier.

Dental nurse here. Xrays are absolutely safe during pregnancy if needed. We avoid routine ones, but if one is needed due to pain, it’s fine. The dosage is so small it’s equal to a days scattered radiation or a short haul flight. Having an extraction is also perfectly safe. Just make sure to keep it clean after to avoid infection.

Dhano21 · 03/07/2021 14:04

@TreaslakeandBack @Nat4392 Thank you so much i just had mine done . I am just so scared i don't want it to affect my baby in anyway as this is my 3rd pregnancy first baby . Would you know how long after an x-ray it's good to get an ultrasound done to check baby is okay ?

Nat4392 · 03/07/2021 14:11

@Dhano21 you won’t need an ultrasound to check baby - it will not have a detrimental effect whatsoever, please don’t worry. Also ultrasounds and X-rays are completely different - ultrasounds use sound waves so see an image, not radiation like traditional xrays do. I know you must be anxious about this but trust me that this treatment is absolutely safe and your baby will be fine x

TreaslakeandBack · 03/07/2021 14:21

You don’t need an ultrasound.
I understand I had 2 losses before DS but really it’s so safe.
Avoid bananas and Brazil nuts for a few weeks if you’re worried! Have a happy pregnancy.

Shootingstar11 · 03/07/2021 15:20

@Dhano21 I’ve not had an ultrasound since but I am due in 4 weeks and can assure you that I have a very active baby in there (hello foot in my stomach all night!). As others have said the benefits outweigh the risks as they are small and the risk of an infection could be harmful to your baby.

Lauren83 · 03/07/2021 15:22

I had an X-ray and extraction at 39 weeks, there had been a few attempts to fill the tooth without X-rays from 37-38 weeks and the filling was too high + I had an infection so in the end I begged them to take out as was in agony and struggling to eat

Jent13c · 03/07/2021 16:44

I had root canal and an xray during pregnancy and my DS is now 4 and thriving. It caused absolutely no ill effects apart from the fact I was utterly miserable getting all that work on my teeth during pregnancy and couldn't take decent pain killers afterwards!

HLW1994 · 03/07/2021 18:22

Radiographer here. The x-ray will be fine, low dose way away from baby. It's all about low dose and distance.
No need for a check up on baby afterwards (if baby was born and needed an x-ray the dose they would get would be higher and is still considered very safe!!) and it's better for baby for you to be happy and healthy! ♥️

JackJack84 · 03/07/2021 18:26

Another radiographer chipping in to agree with pp's! Absolutely fine to have dental X-rays in pregnancy, no need to get an ultrasound afterwards.

Pregnant people?
Dhano21 · 03/07/2021 19:31

Thank you to everyone single one of you for your replies . I have been so scared. The dentist said he's going to refer me to a oral surgeon to see if they can extract the tooth .
