At what age is pregnancy considered more risky and you are offered tests ?(question for my friend)

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

35, isn't it?

pixiefish · 05/11/2004 18:22

I had dd when i was 34 and wasn't offered any extra tests- consultant said i was quite a young mum to be. so definetly over 34

KateandtheGirls · 05/11/2004 18:26

Pixiefish, 34 isn't an old mum to be, but I think your consultant might have been being kind to say you were a young mum to be.

pixiefish · 05/11/2004 18:27

Kate- do you think? i was really chuffed when he said it... looking back i spose he was being nice as that's the type of man he is...
He made my day at the time anyway

bunny2 · 05/11/2004 18:28

in Dorset they offer nuchal fold scans to those over 37.

KateandtheGirls · 05/11/2004 18:28

Sorry to burst your bubble.

pixiefish · 05/11/2004 18:29

I'll get over it I spose Kate...

Pregnancy after 35

bakedpotato · 05/11/2004 18:30

pixiefish, when something (which i should add turned out to be nothing) got picked up on my 20wk scan, they made a HUGE deal about how i was 'a younger mother'... i was 34 and 10 months at the time

it's all to do with demographics. over 35 is considered 'older' in some hospitals, over 37 in others

Twiglett · 05/11/2004 18:30

nuchal folds are standard in many parts of London (for all ages)

Tinker · 05/11/2004 18:39

I was asked if I'll be having an amnio this time (40), wasn't asked at 31/32. Most places don't offer nuchal fold scans though, as I've found out from asking on here

aloha · 05/11/2004 18:55

They offer nuchal fold tests to everyone at Kings, I think. So as an older mother I don't think I got any more tests than anyone else. I didn't go for CVS or amnio in the end, either at 38 or 41 as my nuchal result was good and no soft markers. I hope all is well, but when it came to it just couldn't face the mc risk.

bakedpotato · 05/11/2004 19:14

(I know this is a tangent, but nuchal folds not currently offered at the Whittington in london, i may add... whatever your age

i rang to double check whether NF was available at the Whit 2 wks before my 12-wk scan, was told definitely yes, then on the day they said because of a new national standardising policy, they were no longer able to offer it.

made me spit, i may say, not least because at the 20-wk scan 2 soft markers turned up. thankfully all OK but, you know, the implications hardly bear thinking about)

zebra · 05/11/2004 19:23

Mothers 35 plus site may be useful.

bonym · 06/11/2004 16:50

I'm 38 & 5mths pg - was offered amnio as a matter of course and midwife seemed a little surprised when I refused. Nuchal scans aren't offered on NHS here so I had one done privately.
