Elective c-section for breech baby?

Gemmaemilyx · 02/07/2021 13:05

I'm 34 weeks and baby is still breech. Whilst I know there's still plenty of time for her to turn I was wondering if anyone had an elective csection for their breech baby and if so how many weeks were they?
Hoping it won't come to that, but would like to know.
Thanks :-)

I had one with breech twins. Only found out twin 1 had turned breech at 36+5, she'd been head down before then and was all set for vb after placenta had moved enough. They didn't want me going over 38wk, pretty standard with multiples. I had my elcs band on 38wk, had 2 lots of steroids prior to help develop the lungs.

They do tend to try hold out until 39wk with singletons to allow the lungs to mature without steroids, if you go in to labour prior to your booking they get you in as an emergency (if they have time). They will also offer you an ecv but the sucess rates aren't great and it can be a very uncomfortable procedure.

I had an elective c-section for a breech baby at 39 weeks which is the earliest they'll do it in my trust. It turns out he was breech as the cord was wrapped around his neck so was keeping him from turning into the right position. Hope your little one turns for you soon!

Bibbidiboo · 02/07/2021 13:19

I had one - footling breech, apparently the most dangerous form of breech.

My c section was booked in I think it was a day or two before my due date but my waters broke about 5 days before the due date and they did it in a matter of hours after that. My ob kept saying he thought we weren’t going to make it to the booked csection (apparently waters are more likely to break in a breech baby). But he was very positive for it to happen - he said it was better for the baby if I went into labour first

Ooh Thankyou for your replies!

Yes I am going to decline the manual turn after a lot of research of outcomes and success rates... doesn't sound pleasant either!

I'm hoping she will turn but I don't have much hope at the moment as she seems to be comfy breech!

My little boy was breech from 28 weeks, the midwife was sure that he would turn and wasn't going to refer me to a consultant until 36 weeks. I pushed and got an initial appointment at 34 weeks to gain more info then another at 37 to confirm breech position and book ELCS for 39+1. They scan you on the day of the ELCS to check that baby hasn't turned too.

I didn't go with the ECV either, odds weren't great, he was super comfy in that position and I didn't want to risk anything happening.

FoxtrotSkarloey · 02/07/2021 13:47

Yes, I did with my first. Tried a lot of exercises, swimming, moxibustion and then an ECV at 38 weeks.

Baby delivered by ELCS at 39+1. It was all absolutely fine and if I had had another one the same, I wouldn't have wasted time on everything else, and just made the decision earlier for the c-section if it didn't turn naturally.

Gemmaemilyx · 02/07/2021 17:50

Hiya

Thankyou glad other people don't fancy the ECV. The 2 people I know had to have an emergency csection on the table when they had it, stuck in my mind and it's put me off!

Also tried the swimming and ball, not to much walking as it hurts now!

Will keep you updated but I don't think the statistics are with me as the weeks go on!

I had a footling breech, discovered at 36w.
tried ECV at 37 weeks - it was horrific and didn't work.

had him at 39w+2

waterjungle · 02/07/2021 18:08

Yup. First one was breach at 37 weeks. ECV didn't stand a chance (she gave one twist and said -he's not moving). He was doubled up like a deckchair with his ankles behind his ears. When they pulled him out one of the team said they'd never seen anything like it.
Second one was EC because because I had pre eclampsia, gestational diabetes, and didn't fancy my chances after a previous section.
I was worried about pushback but luckily I had a very understanding female consultant who announced she had no idea why so many male consultants were "obsessed with the idea of making women push babies out of their fannies"
Reader; I may just have fallen in love with her at that moment.

waterjungle · 02/07/2021 18:12

I also remember being scanned before they attempted the ECV and being told by a very confident doctor that he had turned. He took time to show me where his head was and everything. Then he went a bit quiet and realised what he had been showing me for the last 10 minutes was babies arse not his face. Apparently it's a very common mistake and wasn't because my child had a face that looked like a bum.

hollywhooo · 02/07/2021 20:03

I had mine in May at 39+5. A lovely experience and great recovery :) good luck!!

Doyouavocado · 02/07/2021 20:32

Me! I think I was 37 weeks and refused the option to manually turn. I really wanted to c-section so was very happy with the scenario 😊

Gemmaemilyx · 30/07/2021 11:42

Update: baby turned at 37 weeks!

However baby is on the 97th percentile so they want to induce me at 39 weeks... a real rollercoaster! Didn't think I'd be going through labour to be honest!! Haha!!

@Gemmaemilyx Great news.

Only tip for you is, if you have to have the hormone drip seriously consider having an epidural. I had the drip with our 1st and the contractions were intense with barely any gap between, spontaneous labours were much more manageable pain wise.

Gemmaemilyx · 30/07/2021 11:55

@Chelyanne hiya! Thanks for the advice- I'm having the pessary but I will most definitely be wanting the epidural! (I did with my son - no medals for bravery here 🤣) did it take long to go into labour / give birth?

Sorry to hear it was a painful experience - I've heard a lot of this!

I'm having a sweep next week at 38+3 so I'm praying i don't make it to induction as I went into labour after my sweep with my son so keeping my fingers crossed!

Update: turns out I didn't even make it to induction I went into labour naturally and gave birth 38+2! She's amazing!

Also scan measured her 8lbs at 37 weeks and was 8lb 2oz when born.

Thanks all xx
