Misdiagnosis of DVT early pregnancy

I developed DVT at 6 weeks. I called my GP about a week after onset because I wasn't aware of the condition. The pain started out mild.

The pain progressively got worse over the following week to the point of agony. I spoke to 3 different GPs at my local surgery. I saw 1 for examination. They all suggested I had musculoskeletal pain and told to me use paracetamol and ice. Not one of the doctors hinted or ever suggested I may have a blood clot.

I eventually took myself to A&E where a scan revealed I had DVT in my right leg. I was prescribed Clexane 60mg x2 daily. I was cautioned with a list of high blood pressure symptoms. I also experienced blurry vision followed by intensive headaches 3 times in a short space of time. GP did not check my blood pressure.

Since speaking with a midwife I have been told I'm high risk and will have consultant care at the hospital. I have my first scan next week when I'll be 11+5. I will also receive the care of a haematologist. I am absolutely petrified. This is my first and my symptoms so far have been very difficult to deal with. I have read pregnancy increases risk of DVT but it is not common.

I’m registered at a poor GP surgery and have sent a complaint. Family suggest I consider a negligence claim also. I won’t relay the full story but opportunities were missed and from what I understand about DVT now, it is not a condition that can afford to be mistaken for a sprain. The doctors at the hospital were concerned with my symptoms from the outset but the GPs didn’t even suggest a test to at least rule it out.

I wanted to share this because the signs of my DVT were not visually obvious as in redness, swelling. The pain on the other hand.. absolute hell in the space of a week. I could barely walk or use stairs. I have no previous history of blood clots and it is not in my family as far as I know. My risk factors are pregnancy and over 35 (36).

If anyone else has experienced early onset of DVT please share. I've since read lots about the condition but I often see most women who di get it develop it later on in pregnancy or just after. Or they have previous problems with blood clots. It makes me wonder why this happened to me at this stage. I'd also love to hear your GP experiences regarding this.

I’m so sorry this happened to you but glad they’ve found out what it is now and put you on medication. No experience in the UK, but when I lived in the USA I rang my doctor once and said I had a pain in my leg and at the mere mention of this I was sent immediately off for a scan, with no other symptoms. Was your pain in the calf as I believe that’s what is usually supposed to be a big red flag to send someone for checks for a dvt x

Really sorry you are going through this.

There are some great resources on the Thrombosis UK website - thrombosisuk.org/, and a link to some support groups there

The heamatologist may do various tests to see if there are any genetic causes, they an also do tests for other conditions but they need to wait until after pregnancy for most of those.

Really sorry you are going through this but I would definitely recommend thrombosis Uk website and the associated Facebook group is great for support
