Experiences with IUGR

Hi all,

I'm 35w5, second pregnancy, and just been told at my 3rd tri scan that my baby is on the 3rd centile. I have to go back in a week to see how things are progressing but have been warned that I may need to be induced early. Where I live, all pregnancies are consultant-led so today's scan was with my Obgyn and I don't think she saw any issues with blood pressure or placenta but I'll know more next week.

FWIW he had some small measurements in the 2nd tri too so it doesn't seem to have come on suddenly.

I would love to hear some experiences with IUGR as I'm terrified that this means he has a genetic condition. Has anyone had a teeny baby due to IUGR who went on to thrive and be normal size?

Thanks so much in advance.

I had an IUGR baby. There was an issue with blood flow through the placenta. She was delivered early as a result. It was a worrying time but she is now an apparently healthy six year old.

That's great to hear @eurochick!

My dd had iugr, born at 30 weeks due to my pre-eclampsia. She is fine now, no long term problems from the iugr.

Wow, 30 weeks sounds so early @happysunr1se So good to hear another positive outcome Smile

My previous baby was an SGA baby born on the 4th centile, however this wasn't picked up until he was born. I'm consultant led this pregnancy due to his size and they've found I have a notch on my left uterine artery which I also would have had in the first pregnancy as it's the same dad so they don't just develop second time round.
My son quickly reached the 25th centile after birth and now at 21 months old he's around the 50th, so no long term affects.

Just chipping in! I’ve had 2 IUGR/SGA babies, likely due to gestational diabetes (undiagnosed first time around). Induced at 38 weeks with DD1, born healthy and 5lbs on the dot. Now a sassy gorgeous 4yo starting school in September with no lasting effects! DD2 I was induced at 37 weeks and she was born a dinky 4lbs. Some oxygen saturation issues at birth, spent 10 days on NICU but has thrived since coming home. She’s now 10 months, hitting her milestones and loves her food so much she’s bigger than her sister was at this age!

Sending lots of love and good vibes, OP Flowers it’s a nervewracking time, I remember it well. When they told me DD2’s abdominal circumference measurement was static, I just cried and cried. You just have to trust the docs and remember that they want baby out so they can help them. When they stay then inside you it’s all out of anyone’s control and lord knows what could happen.

Take care of yourself!

Thank you so much @hotpotatohotpotato21 and @milknapplayrepeat for sharing your experiences.

Milk, having your lovely DD in the NICU for 10 days must have been so tough. It's amazing how well she is doing now! Really incredible.

Such positive outcomes make me feel so much better! I did a lot of crying yesterday but hearing your experiences has helped a lot and now I'm going to focus on the practicalities like getting a hospital bag packed just in case! Flowers

Good luck with the rest of your PG, hotpotato!

My daughter was SGA, she's been on between 50-75th centile since around 8m old, she's now 22m. I had regular scans from 28w to monitor her, she came on her own accord, not induced etc
