Reassurance scans

Has anyone had a reassurance scan before their 12 week scan? Where did you go? How much was it? Was it worth it?

This is my 4th pregnancy, all previous pregnancies have been smooth, so no particular worries. However for various reasons it would be convenient to tell some people before the 12 week scan - eg we're going away with our in laws for a week and I won't be able to hide it, and with three older kids, once we tell them they will broadcast it to the world, but it might not be that easy to hide from them after a while.

Why do you need a scan? Just tell those closest to you, but make it very clear it's very early days and you are waiting on your 12 week scan.

mumofmunchkin · 30/06/2021 15:49

I appreciate your point, but if we end up telling the kids (which we will likely do if I start feeling really crap, as my eldest will worry), then they will kindly pass on the info to all and sundry without that caution - they are 7, 5 and 2 so I can't ask anything else of them.

I had an early scan at 8 weeks then NIPT (which includes scan) at 11 weeks.

Both at Ultrasound Direct. Would recommend!

JackJack84 · 30/06/2021 16:01

I had scans at ultrasound direct at 8 weeks (£70) & 15 weeks (£45) both were brilliant

Thirtyrock39 · 30/06/2021 16:07

Scans only really tell you what's happening that day and are no guarantee plus can create extra worries- eg dates are less accurate so you might be told you're less far along etc etc...They are a good way to see what's really going on though and can make it seem more real ...personally I'd do as previous poster said and tell close family but that you're early on

boymum88 · 30/06/2021 16:11

Had early scans with both my ds. I wanted to know the pregnancy was it the right place and just for peace of mind ( yes I'm aware that a early scan doesn't stop the worst from happing) had the scan 6/7 weeks another two weeks later than a gender reveal at 16 weeks
We have a lovely local independent shop in our village. Think I paid somewhere between 50-60£ he also offered a free 2nd scan two weeks later.
Just check that where u go use hcpc registered tech

recreationalcalpol · 30/06/2021 16:12

The birth company on Harley Street are fabulous. Really great. It turned out that my second pregnancy was miscarrying and they couldn’t have been kinder. They also remembered me during my third pregnancy and were very sensitive during those early scans, as it was a worrying time for me.

Beeeeeeeeeeeeeep · 30/06/2021 16:17

What do you think an early scan will do? Why would it affect whether you tell people or not? I don't get it

Moominmiss · 30/06/2021 16:25

I had several before 12 weeks. All with window to the womb. Would 100% recommend.

I’d had several losses and for me it made me relax a little more.

I had 3 older children (11, 9, and 7) but still held off from telling them until we’d had the all clear from my nipt test and scan. In fact didn’t tell them until nearer 16 weeks. We told my dad, brother, and my partners family after the nipt around 13 weeks, but decided to hold off as long as we could with the kids to try and not make the pregnancy seem so long. Even now they still all ask how much longer etc. We only told them at 16 weeks as I was showing quite a lot. But had I been able to physically hide it longer from them, I would have lol.

SouthwestSis · 30/06/2021 16:28

Would rather keep my money to spend on little one once they're here, and looking after myself in the meantime.
We have told only close family so far, those who we trust not to share further.

nervousseacreature · 30/06/2021 16:30

I had one at 8 weeks. We had a 5 month old at the time and I just wanted to check there was only one in there! I think it was worthwhile though, we heard the heartbeat

frenchtoast88 · 30/06/2021 16:37

I don't see why people are being snide about your desire to have one, that's not what you asked! I had one at around 8 weeks for both babies just take make sure there was something in there before sharing with closest family. I think it was around £50 and was called Baby Scanning, think they're a chain in Scotland. We were in and out in less than 10mins and it was filled with gender reveal tat but did the job and the sonographer mentioned that she worked in the hospital too, I guess this was just a bit of extra money on the side for her.

cheeseisnice · 30/06/2021 16:39

@ApplePie86

I had an early scan at 8 weeks then NIPT (which includes scan) at 11 weeks.

Both at Ultrasound Direct. Would recommend!

I've done exactly the same! Scan at 8 weeks and NIPT at 11 weeks with ultrasound direct.

But my results are taking forever! How long did yours take to come back?

Fitforforty · 30/06/2021 16:42

Yep
Pregnancy 1 I was booked in and paid but ended up having a miscarriage so didn’t go
Pregnancy 2 - I did all fine.
Pregnancy 4 - They found 2 heartbeats, one probably not viable so they rescanned me 2 weeks later to check on viability.

Sleeplessem · 30/06/2021 16:42

I also don’t understand the need for the snide remarks from judgmental people. I completely understand the desire to get one, especially if you have children you are planning on telling.

I think mine was about £60 and I went to window the the womb- it was fine. BUT I have read somethings about them, later in pregnancy, not disclosing or not realising serious problems with pregnancies and as a result not referring back to the NHS for more thorough investigation.

But I say as an early reassurance to check for a heartbeat (knowing that miscarriage rate drops to less than 5% after heartbeat is detected), if it makes you feel better and you’ve got the cash to spare, go for it. Flowers

xsjrx · 30/06/2021 16:42

Would recommend Window to the womb, had a reassurance scan at 16 weeks as im a FTM at 38. Back there tomorrow for our 4D scan, they were just brilliant.

Moominmiss · 30/06/2021 16:46

Can also second @recreationalcalpol about The Birth Company on Harley Street. I had my nipt test and scan done there and it was the best experience.

They were incredibly professional and the scan was more detailed and thorough than any nhs scan I’ve had to date! My results were through super fast and the whole thing from booking to results was just handled fantastically.

I’ve had a couple of scans at ultrasound direct and honestly wouldn’t recommend then. Others seem to have had good experiences with them but having had scans at window to the womb from as early as 6 weeks, again at 7 and 8, all scans were super super clear. Had one at ultrasound direct at 8+5 and the image was super fuzzy, could barely make out a gestational sac on the screen, let alone anything in it. The sonography gave no explanation of what she was seeing, all took less than 5 minutes. The window to the womb ones were quite detailed for a private place, and like I said super clear to see.

Moominmiss · 30/06/2021 16:47

I’m actually having a 4d scan back with window to the womb next week at 29+3!

A1b2c3d4e5f6g7 · 30/06/2021 17:06

I had an early private scan and think they're great. Had a miscarriage before so wanted to make sure everything looked okay. Plus after a scan at eight weeks with a heartbeat, the miscarriage rate goes down to 2%. I used Ultrasound Direct also because it was closest to me, I thought they were great, pointed lots out to me, showed me the heartbeat, measured it was regular etc

choccrumpet · 30/06/2021 17:10

I've got my first scan booked for tomorrow with window to the womb at 6+2, scan is £80. Have read lots of good reviews about them on trust pilot and they're one of the only places near me. Lovely to hear good feedback about them here as well.

MaryBoBary · 30/06/2021 18:21

I did with all 3 pregnancies. It gave me either reassurance or an early warning sign that things weren't right. I went with a local company, it was about £60 including a dvd and photos. If you want to go then why not? Although I went at about 8 weeks, earlier than that and there's really not much to see or any more reassurance than a pregnancy test.

Catfox1 · 30/06/2021 18:37

Yeah some strange replies here. I wouldn’t want to tell anyone until I knew baby was at least in the right place/growing roughly as estimated

Catfox1 · 30/06/2021 18:45

Having said that I wouldn’t bother booking one until 8 or 9 weeks in which case (or in my case!) may as well wait until 12

wanderedlonelyasacloud · 30/06/2021 18:50

I had a private reassurance scan at 6+5 (I had estimated I would be 7w but I turned out to be 6+5) and saw the heartbeat. I just wanted to check it was really happening and check that it had a heartbeat more than anything. We'd been ttc for 18 months so I just couldnt believe it was really happening.

I think for seeing whether there's a heartbeat they're great but dont rely on them to find or spot any issues.

I just googled private ultrasound and went to the nearest one that had good reviews, it was £55

glasspaw · 30/06/2021 18:58

We are having a 10 week scan for a similar reason. Both sides of our family will all be together on 10+6 (which is a very rare occurrence) so we want to know viability before spilling the beans.

Clearly we won’t be past the 12 week point but we can say it’s early days. Just more of a comfort that there’s a heartbeat really. Also, having a scan photo feels like it’s a nice thing to be able to share.
