Finding out sex in very early pregnancy - has anyone done it?

I'm just over 7 weeks pregnant with DC2. Have DD. Genuinely don't mind if DC2 a boy or girl, just incredibly impatient and nosy! Think maybe a boy just because my pregnancy so far is totally different and a lot easier than last time.
There are companies which send you home kits to test your urine and/or blood to check testosterone levels, during early pregnancy, which apparently give a very reliable indicator very early on about sex.
Has anyone any experience of this? Any recommendations on particular companies and so on? And was it accurate?!

Are you talking about Sneakpeek? Just look at their Trust pilot reviews, avoid!

You will find out at 20 weeks or could find out through a private scan at 16. The blood tests need to be done in a v sterile environment

PrimeraVez · 30/06/2021 09:55

I've heard of these but have also read very mixed reviews and I always think if it was that easy/reliable, then everyone would be doing it.

I found out the sex of DC3 at 12 weeks as saw a fetal medicine consultant for a scan, and he said he was '70%' confident it was a girl (currently 31w and still looking like a girl!) Otherwise, I guess you can just do NIPT at around 10 weeks and find out definitively then.

RizzleRazzle · 30/06/2021 09:56

Also never heard of a urine test that can tell you a babies sex?! How can that be possible?

user9086336 · 30/06/2021 09:57

I think the harmony test can tell you sex but not sure if they're allowed?

emsyj37 · 30/06/2021 09:57

I had the Harmony test at 10 weeks (due to my age and previous high risk nuchal fold results in previous pregnancies). So I knew DS was a boy from 11 weeks.

emsyj37 · 30/06/2021 09:58

I paid privately for the Harmony so not sure if that makes a difference, but the sex is included on the results chart.

Mumtotwofurbabies · 30/06/2021 10:02

I also had the harmony test (for other reasons as it’s a better test for chromosome issues than the NHS screening) but as a nice bonus you find out the sex! Did this at 11 weeks. It’s the only accurate way to find out the sex that early I think, but is expensive l, around £500!

TakeYourFinalPosition · 30/06/2021 10:06

The urine tests are for “fun” - male DNA can’t be detected in urine.

A friend gave me a Sneakpeek as an early pregnancy present. I did it twice, both times it got lost on the way back to them. It was messy, and much harder to get that much blood than I’d expected. There seems to be a good proportion of people who don’t get a result because it took too long to get enough blood, and they can’t do the test.

And then there’s the contamination risk…

I was annoyed they wouldn’t refund my friend or send another kit; given that they could track the parcel back to their shipping company - but I wouldn’t recommend it.

Harmony or any type of NIPT can tell you pretty early, but you’d need to pay for it privately. It’d be reliable, though.

Girlmama3 · 30/06/2021 10:07

I've had the harmony twice now and have known the sex from 10 weeks!

Both sonographers have got it right on the 20 week scans!

Dp doesn't want to know again this time so I'm hiding coloured clothes 😂

Roomonb · 30/06/2021 10:09

I had a harmony test too. Was nice to know!

Tempusfudgeit · 30/06/2021 10:09

Yep, Harmony test. Found out at 11 weeks we were very low risk for the three main chromosomal abnormalities and that she was a girl. Worth every penny.

worrybutterfly · 30/06/2021 10:10

We were told at our private 12 week scan.

I questioned the sonographer on how accurate it was and she said it was 95%.

The gender we were told was correct.

SpacePotato · 30/06/2021 10:11

I had a NIPT test and thought I might as well find out the sex. Knew at 10 weeks.

Unless you need the genetic testing it's a lot to pay for just not waiting a few months to find out.

worrybutterfly · 30/06/2021 10:14

Similar to @PrimeraVez

Should add ours was a private scan because of issues that needed to be looked at. The quality of the scan images and the detail they went into was much higher than at our NHS scan.

I'm not sure they'd be able, or willing to, look at gender in a standard NHS 12 week scan.

Moominmiss · 30/06/2021 10:20

I had a private nipt test at 12 weeks for reasons due to my age and wanting a more derailed test than the nhs combined screening.

We opted to find out the sex from that. So we’ve known from early on that we were having a boy.

I wouldn’t use companies like sneakpeak etc. They have awful reviews and the contamination risk of getting some of your oh’s dna which would give a potentially false result, is quite high.

We also had a private scan at 16 weeks (not to find out sex as we already knew, just we were impatient to see baby again), and they were easily able to confirm it was a boy. So a private scan at 16 weeks could be another option if you don’t want to wait until 20 weeks!

LakeShoreD · 30/06/2021 10:24

I had Panorama (another brand of NIPT similar to Harmony) at 11 weeks because it’s a more accurate screening test than the combined test used by the NHS and I also got to find out the sex at the same time. A home kit sounds like nonsense.

rooarsome · 30/06/2021 10:50

I had the sneak peek test and it was messy and difficult (I'm also a nurse!)
The first one got lost and the second clotted so no result available. After all the faff I booked in for a private scan and found out at 14 weeks

Radio4ordie · 30/06/2021 10:52

If you want to know at 7 weeks then free foetal DNA (as in harmony tests) is the only reliable way to do it.

Bear2014 · 30/06/2021 10:57

They told me that DS was a boy at my NHS 12-week scan. Not from any blood tests, they could just see apparently.

Shmithecat2 · 30/06/2021 10:58

Blood test is the only way to know that early, and you'll have to pay. I had blood drawn at 10 weeks to do a MaterniT21 test (similar to Harmony) to rule out chromosomal abnormalities which also confirmed the sex, although I didn't want to know the sex so they didn't tell me.

Sonarl · 30/06/2021 11:06

I found out the sex (not gender) of all 4 of my children at each 12wk scan, some were at 11 and a few days. This was at NHS hospitals and includes one from 17 years ago now so it'd definitely been possible (though obviously not 100% conclusive) using standard NHS scanners for some time now. I also had private scans at about the same time which confirmed each one (and they were much more emphatic about it, die to higher resolution scanners, at the time). I also had CVS with three of them due to a hereditary condition and these 3 confirmed the sex, of course, as look at the babies chromosomes (as does the Harmony test).

The NHS sonograohers at the 12 week scan were happy to tell me what they thought, but wouldn't put it on the notes, and stressed it wasn't definitive. The private sonographers were happy to be much more definite. Tests that look at the babies DNA (CVS, harmony etc) are the oy way to be 100% definitive on the baby's sex though.

Sparechange · 30/06/2021 11:09

I’ve had a harmony test at 10-11 weeks with all of my pregnancies, and had the results, including sex, a week later

Rubyrecka · 30/06/2021 17:20

I had sneak peak (the one where u go to a clinic bit do it yourself) and was all fine. The results were correct.

sarah13xx · 30/06/2021 17:47

I would wait til 12 weeks and send your scan to the nub whisperer. Way cheaper (think it was only £10) but mine was right and the other two people on a page I was on who recommended it had sent theirs and both were right

Mumoftwo2021 · 30/06/2021 20:05

I used sneakpeek at 9 weeks and found it easy, sanitised everywhere & results were accurate xx
