8 weeks pregnant. I have been doing vigorous exercise which leaves me out of breath. Terrified of mmc now.

Hi everyone,
I am currently 8 weeks 3 days pregnant. I am part of an intermediate level swimming group and go for a long swim once a week. Eg. Last week we swam 1300m and iy took us about 45 mins. It does leave me out of breath if I'm honest.
I am an experienced swimmer but the season just started right when I found out I was pregnant, so its not something I've been doing all year round.
I did some Google research before commiting to the swim group and I decided that it was safe.
However today I am doing some more googling and I've come across some advice saying that you should not partake in exercise that leaves you breathless as when you are breathless your baby is too.
Of course now I am panicing. I have my first scan on Thursday-3 days time, and I am convinced that I will have had a MMC.
I have not really had any pregnancy symptoms to date, though I could swear I might be having certain food cravings, but that could be all in my head. My nipples do look bigger at times, but not all the time.
What do you guys think? Am I in trouble? Thanks

to be honest at this point your baby doesn't have any lungs so its not out of breath. If you're used to that then its probably fine and unlikely to have caused any harm.

I'd maybe take it down a notch though for future.

I had my first midwife appointment last week. They recommended I do exercise that makes me out of breath as this helps to burn calories. If there was any harm to baby they would not have suggested this.

Everyone is advised to exercise whilst pregnant.
Please don't worry, regarding symptoms mine didn't show until 8w and only lasted till 10!
If anything id just rain it in abit and not work as hard whilst exercising.

I ran a marathon in thw first trimester - DD is now 4 and happily bouncing around the living room. I honestly wouldn't worry.

I was advised to continue with exercise as normal when pregnant, as this increases the chances of a healthy pregnancy. At 8 weeks I think the placenta hasn't taken over yet. Being breathless won't have had any impact on the baby at all.

One of my pregnancies was a MMC. There were strong symptoms to start with. I have also had a healthy pregnancy with almost no symptoms in the first trimester. Every pregnancy is different, please try not to worry. Easier said than done, I know! Flowers

I think you're probably fine. With dc1 I regularly swam 2 miles and got breathless. With dc3 I was running at 39 weeks.

The only really comprehensive research into early miscarriage (1st trimester) was in Japan and found that 99% of embryos (they couldn't examine the other 1%) had developmental problems that could not be linked to the mother's activities. Conclusion: if you miscarry pre 13 weeks it's nothing you did/didn't do.

Wow guys thank you so much. I wasn't expecting such positive feedback. I feel so much better. Thanks everyone.

I exercised vigorously from the beginning until 4 days before ds was born and had no problems infact after my EMCS the physio could tell straight away I had because my body was so strong and recovered so well. I didn't exercise in my first pregnancy and was so sore throughout with spd and a terrible recovery I put the difference down yo how fit I was second time round tbh.

twindomino · 28/06/2021 09:34

@Keepmekeeping sorry to go on a tangent, but as someone who had bad SPD the first time it would be great to know if you had it at all the next time or if the exercise prevented/cured it? What exercise do you do?

muddlingmyway · 28/06/2021 13:21

I exercised (and got out of breath) throughout my last pregnancy from the first trimester until a few days past my due date. No harm done to baby (who is now an active toddler)… didn’t tempt him out any earlier either!!

Keepmekeeping · 29/06/2021 00:16

@twindomino I had slight twinges the second time starting about 20 weeks but they never developed into anything if I done a squat for example I could feel the tension and didn't push it but nothing else I 100% put it down to being physically fitter my muscles were able to cope much better.
