Hi! Just looking for any stories from anyone who’s given birth here, preferably semi-recently but happy to hear anything!
The only thing I’ve heard that’s confused me is that you have to go to the dining hall for meals which makes me think of a big school canteen 🤔 anyway thanks I’m advance!

Congratulations @Alicespring
Thanks for the feedback.

Just latching on as I’m having my baby here in a December.

We’ve had good experiences so far with the scans and so on.

For those who’ve been through it before - when you’re in labour and arrive, which entrance is best? The one on Alexandra Parade? Or the Wishart Street one?

I’m not due back now until labour so wanted to check.

I went to into Labour during the night and went via the wishart street entrance as all the others were closed. So during the day you can use any entrance to go up to triage but only wishart street at night and possibly weekends too
Alicespring · 22/07/2021 06:44

@TreeRoad wishart Street if you're in labour. They get you up the emergency access in the lifts straight to triage

TreeRoad · 22/07/2021 09:47

@cuju2407 @Alicespring

Thanks, that’s what I’ll do. Last thing you want between contractions is trying to work out what door to go in. 🥺

cuju2407 · 22/07/2021 09:59

@TreeRoad that's what happened to me. I went to the wrong entrance and had to keep stopping to have a contraction when going to the other entrance 🤦🏼‍♀️

TreeRoad · 22/07/2021 10:47

@cuju2407 Aw nooo! 🙈🥴 I suppose going down that hill would be better than trying to walk up it between contractions, but definitely not ideal!

They should maybe mention at some point when you’re in for scans etc that if labour starts out with the usual hours, to go to the other entrance.

MrsMcNtobe · 22/07/2021 11:24

@TreeRoad I remember reading on my wee bit of paper with the maternity phone numbers that between 6pm and 8am it’s wishart street. I was up a couple of weeks ago to check movements, went at 5pm and it was almost 10pm when I got out cos it was SO busy and i had to leave via wishart street, tbh leaving on your own at that time of night was a bit creepy cos it doesn’t tell you what floor to go down to on the lifts and then it was out a weird service exit that was dead dark 😂

TreeRoad · 22/07/2021 11:33

@MrsMcNtobe Yeah! The GRI/PRM is the worst for creepy corridors. I work in medicine and when I was at Uni I left there lots of times in the dark. I don’t think the Necropolis right across the road helps with the creep factor either. 😂

MrsMcNtobe · 22/07/2021 11:34

@TreeRoad 😂 that was my first time having to go myself, only been for my two scans and my partner was with me both times. I was parked miles down the hill and was so sure I’d get to the top and baby would start bouncing but they were being a wee pest and it took a while 🤦🏻‍♀️

TreeRoad · 22/07/2021 11:45

@MrsMcNtobe Haha I had similar problems with a lazy baby yesterday. The sonographer had me jumping on the spot, wiggling my hips, turning over etc. Not very elegant as you can imagine. 🙈 Might as well get used to my dignity being a thing of the past though eh? 😂

Have you had the baby now?

2020mission · 22/07/2021 12:02

Quick question ladies... I've been sent a whooping cough appointment for the PRM and it's for fifteen mins before my 20 week anomaly scan appointment 😬 given I waited for an hour and 45 mins after my 12 week scan to get my bloods taken, I really don't have any confidence in them being able to fit this in before the scan!

Has anyone else had a vaccination here and found they were taken on time and the vaccination was done within 5 mins?

SproutingSprout2021 · 22/07/2021 12:12

@2020mission - I arrived quite early and was taken early and in & out in 2 mins so it all went really smoothly for me! And I had the long wait for my bloods after the 12 week scan too so fingers crossed it’s the same for you 😀

2020mission · 22/07/2021 12:14

Thanks @SproutingSprout2021 I think I'll try turning up early then too. If they don't take me in by my appointment time slot I'm leaving and off to the scan. The whooping cough can wait until later if they can't fit it in 😅

I'm hoping the hospital can share the gender at the 20 week scan 🤞 I know some places have a policy where they won't tell.

MrsMcNtobe · 22/07/2021 12:19

@TreeRoad I still have 7 weeks to go 😭 how long do you have?

@2020mission both times I went for vaccines after my scans (flu then whooping cough) and both times the nurse was sitting in her wee room chilling waiting on me 😂 once I was early and the other time I was mega late

user1488233303 · 22/07/2021 12:41

I’m 28 weeks and they took me for the whooping cough after my scan, I didn’t wait too long. I was the same for the bloods after the 12 week scan, a long wait!
Midwives all seem lovely at the Royal, I had a couple of extra appointments to check my blood pressure.

MrsMcNtobe · 22/07/2021 12:53

@user1488233303 they really do seem nice, I called triage and the receptionist wasn’t very friendly so I was dreading going but when I got seen the two midwifes then the doctor were all so so nice, put my mind at rest for whenever I go in to have the baby

TreeRoad · 22/07/2021 14:20

@MrsMcNtobe 19 and a bit weeks to go for me. Hope you’re coping ok in this heat!

@2020mission I had my 20 week scan yesterday. I didn’t even know I was to get the whooping cough vaccine yesterday until the receptionist asked if I wanted it. Apparently my community midwife should’ve arranged this.

Anyway, I had the scan then she sent me round the corner and I got it. It took 5 minutes and there was no queue or anything. The nurse took me in before I even had a chance to sit down in the waiting area. They just ask a few questions about previous reactions to vaccinations and whether you’ve had a Covid vaccine in the last 7 days.

2020mission · 22/07/2021 15:13

Thanks all. @TreeRoad I would have been the same - it was me that asked my midwife on my 16 week appointment call about it which she then posted me the appointment through for 😅 I might try just asking at reception when I arrive if I can go in for the vaccine after the scan. I occasionally feel a bit dizzy after vaccinations and would really prefer to be feeling 100% in the scan! After would be much more ideal 👍

TreeRoad · 22/07/2021 16:02

@2020mission Do we have the same midwife? 😂 I haven’t even seen mine in person and I’m more than halfway through.

Definitely just ask at reception (maybe go a bit early in case they say no). They’re usually quite accommodating.

MrsMcNtobe · 02/09/2021 08:08

Just posting to see if anyone has any more up to date info on how things are working with visiting etc? Only a few weeks til I’m due 😱🙈

2020mission · 19/12/2021 01:27

@MrsMcNtobe how did everything go?

I'm hating the hospital lately ladies 😅 they are shocking with setting up appointments my letters keep arriving AFTER the appointment and it's a nightmare calling them trying to find out what they have booked they just keep transferring me between departments and hanging up before I get any answers! I was diagnosed with excess amniotic fluid (polyhydramnios) after a growth scan at 32 weeks. They sent me away with no information and didn't invite me back until 6 weeks later for a second scan. That scan was a trainee sonographer who struggled to take measurements and took ages and only vaguely mentioned the fluid level at the end of the scan which was the reason we were there in the first place - it increased too so wasn't great news! They have been so unsupportive and continuously leave me with no information or explanations. They never gave me access to the badger app so it's not possible for me to just simply check my details on my own. I'm now dreading giving birth here (38+3 today) so it could be anytime.

@SproutingSprout2021 @Mabelhc how are you both getting on??

MrsMcNtobe · 19/12/2021 08:34

@2020mission wellllll…. 😂 I got admitted for induction due to reduced movements, that was on the Sunday and the first induction didn’t work and neither did the second for that matter 🤦🏻‍♀️ The midwives and nurses on the ward were mostly amazing, just the one really ignorant woman but they were just SO short staffed that really the care wasn’t great which wasn’t their fault. It was 2x2hour visiting slots that had to be booked in the morning which was horrible because I just felt so lonely and cried every time my boyfriend left me 😂😂

I was more of less left there from the Tuesday (after 2nd induction failed) until I kicked off on the Thursday, they were short of equipment so couldn’t monitor the baby, she still wasn’t moving much etc but they told me there was no room in the labour ward and it may take days for a bed to be available unless I can get my own waters to break then they’d take me up (ridiculous thing to say tbh). I eventually said if you don’t get me to the labour ward to try and break my waters then I’ll have to leave (they wouldn’t allow me home because I’d been admitted) I hasn’t eaten in days (food was rotten, make sure someone brings you sandwiches 😂) I hasn’t slept due to the noise round about me and funnily enough after that convo I was in the labour ward 20 minutes later with my waters broken another 30 mins after that 🤷🏻‍♀️

Somehow that night the labour ward had managed to empty itself and I was the only one up their, the hormone drip for contractions didn’t agree with my wee girl (9hours later and 1cm dilated 😂) and the doctor came in and said she had been watching her heart rate on the screen and was quite concerned and I made the decision to have a section and honestly it was the best decision as I was exhausted from the stress of being in the hospital x

Mabelhc · 19/12/2021 09:57

I'm so nervous as a ftm & with covid. I'm hoping the visiting restrictions exclude end stage labour/birth... or I'm no going hahaha!

Huge congratulations @MrsMcNtobe!! Sorry it was so tough on you but it definitely sounds like the section saved the day! Enjoy being home Xmas Grin

And @2020mission that sounds like such a nightmare for you... app and all! Hopefully sooner rather than later eh! I'm also 38 weeks and just desperate to get things going. Not been at the hospital for months as I've just been seeing Community Midwives. Sounds about as chaotic as I thought it'd be....

2020mission · 19/12/2021 16:26

@MrsMcNtobe aww no sorry to hear you had a long induction process there! I'm so glad you shared all that with us though as they've suggested I have an induction at 39 weeks due to having some excess amniotic fluid and baby measuring slightly big. That would be the 23rd December so if we agree I'm basically choosing a Christmas Day birthday and to be stuck in hospital for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day 😭 possibly Boxing Day too. They've told us nothing about the process so I had no idea my husband would only be able to visit for short slots twice a day and I assumed I might have been sent away with the pessary in and just to come back the next day 😅 ahhh. I don't know what to do as I personally don't feel that big and want to let him come out when he's ready and avoid spending days in hospital for an induction that may not even work with covid spreading like it is now! 😬 my excess fluid is measuring at 10.2cm so classed as mild (normal is up to 8cm) and baby was estimated as measuring around 7.2 lbs. It's only because I'm only 5'2 they are suggesting induction as if I wasn't petite they said I'd be ok to be left longer. Baby is also head down in the pelvis facing the optimal way so there's minimal risk of breech etc. Due date is 30th December.
My husband thinks the hospital will be missing the best doctors on Christmas Day too. Just feeling so uneasy with the situation. First time mum so have no previous experience with any of it. What would you all do??

@Mabelhc when's you due date?
