Hey so I’m a first time mum and I’ve decided I went to formula feed I’m just wondering what everyone thinks the best formula milk is? I get that different brands may work for different babies but I don’t know which one I should try out when she’s here ? I want one that’s easy to get from most shops.

They're all the same, made in same factory. There is legislation to ensure they all meet certain standards.

There isn't a best brand. You have to pick one and see how baby gets on with it, what works for one doesn't work for all so just swap brands if you need to until baby is settled on one. In the UK rules around formula quality are quite strict so I go with cow & gate 1st as it's easily available and not too expensive. We have had to have our girls on soya formula after illnesses which is much more pricey but managed to swap back again once their digestive systems recovered.

I think they all have to comply to the same standards but personally I would opt for a palm-oil free version as there have been some concerns about it inhibiting nutrient absorption.

They are all much the same. Find one that is available from your local shop and go with that!

TentTalk · 24/06/2021 14:28

Cheapest one that's available locally. They're much of a muchness nutritionally.

HollyGarland · 24/06/2021 14:30

They’re all the same. Get whichever is cheapest and most readily available in your local supermarket.

If you're going to do that you better not tell your health visitor. Mine is always adamant that formula shouldn't be changed Confused. I put my baby on lactose free milk (she's my third. Wish I had known I could buy it over the counter with my last 2) she's like a different baby from the first 8 weeks of her life. I didn't tell the health visitor.

@Iminaglasscaseofemotion health visitors never asked what formula any of ours were on. You're lucky if you can see one to get babies weighed these days anyway.

I think mine is just really nosey and thins she knows best about everything to be honest. She has to tell you you're doing something wrong at nearly every visit. I've has 3 kids, and I've been a childminder for 11 years. Think I know what I'm doing at this point 🤣

Parker231 · 24/06/2021 14:57

I bought the one the local supermarket seemed to stock the most of so it was easy to get hold of.

Misty999 · 24/06/2021 15:09

I got cow and gate as stocked in nearly all shops where I live x

hippidyhiphip · 24/06/2021 15:11

I tried a few, in the end I found hipp organic the gentlest on tummies.
Less wind, better poos. But this could just be what suited my child the best.
Used hipp straight from the start with baby 2 and no issues whatsoever.

Theres a good programme on this on channel 4, should still be available online. Only 20mins I think.

They are all the same barring soya/goat/lactose free for allergies. It's a massive con. As is follow on milk- totally unnecessary but used by the milk companies to advertise their brand as they can't for newborn milk.

Quality wise as pps say there is strict legislation on nutrition and safety aspects

All babies differ, I bf until dd was almost 10 months at which point my my milk dried up due to a medical issue and I had to switch to formula. First few we tried - projectile vomiting par extraordinaire! Grin poor dd

But then we found one she was ok with and stuck to that. Annoying to have had large tubs of the others leftover though and we'd nobody we could give it to.

Bear in mind though that different types of bottles and teats can also affect how well baby feeds.

We also had to try a few different bottle styles and teats until we found the right ones for dd so don't buy loads of the same kind initially until you know what suits - and this can change as they age too.

De88 · 25/06/2021 01:05

Our first two got on well with Aptamil a so was the only one we previously tried. but by the time we'd had youngest they seemed to have changed the formula. It just didn't seem to dissolve well at all. Lots of clumps of powder and blocking of teats despite lots and lots and lots of trying. Lots of people on forums saying the same, but also plenty of posters perfectly happy with it.

Switched to Cow and Gate which gave no.problems and coincidence or not, less farty baby. Agree with everyone else, they are all the same content wise, pick any one that's easily available and only change if you have to.
