Cyclizine Experiences

Called my GP today as I am really struggling with the constant nausea (8+1). He has prescribed Cyclizine and I stupidly googled before taking any and now I've made myself so anxious about taking it!! Everything I've read is people saying that they still felt sick and knocked out from it. I am on my own a lot with my two young children and I also work full time in an office. I can't be drowsy! Help! 😞

I took cyclizine in my third pregnancy and could not have coped without it. I found it did help the nausea significantly for me, although not eliminating it altogether. I wished I had taken it in my first two pregnancies as the sickness was so debilitating every time and nothing else helped....I hope it helps you to get by, I would have struggled to work without it I think with two children as well

Thank you for taking the time to reply @CSmidlands ; was you still able to function on it? I already have fatigue (from pregnancy) so the thought of being anymore zombie like really worries me! X

I took it with all three of my pregnancies and was able to function fine. Maybe start on a small dose (I used to break the tablets in half towards the end when I was feeling less sick). You could always give it a go and stop if you feel too tired. There was also something else I took- Stemetil (spelling may not be right) which I seem to remember were much less drowsy making. Good luck

They've honestly been a little miracle drug for me! I was so sick with my 1st but gp wouldn't prescribed anything, after 2 weeks constant sickness this pregnancy they prescribed cyclizine and I've only been sick a handful of times, had a lot of energy again and was able to function

Yes I found although I was generally tired, the improvement in my nausea etc gave me more energy, and I was doing a long commute at the time and managed ok. Like someone else has said maybe give it a try and see - I think there might be a couple of other options if it doesn’t work for you?

I didn't feel drowsy at all! And it worked pretty well for me. Takes a few days to get the full effect, though - I think it needs to build up in your system. Even if you do feel drowsy, some people find that is just temporary and their body gets used to it.

I gave in at 13 weeks and started it. I did find it took the edge off the nausea but it did make me feel very spaced out. I found it better taking half a tablet at a time. It still had an effect without the drunk like feeling.

I'm taking it and haven't noticed any change in my fatigue. I'm still tired but no more so. It helps with the nausea.

I took it for months in one of my pregnancies and had no side effects at all, it just stopped me being sick and stopped me feeling sick.

F4iryLite · 24/06/2021 09:26

It's been a lifesaver for me! I started taking it at around 8 weeks, and it did make me feel drowsy for a few days. But it was better than being sick 10 times a day.

After about a week, I didn't have many side effects, and after 3 weeks I was feeling almost back to normal.

I think it takes a while to build up in your system, but the side effects did wear off for me.

Echoing what others have said - I’ve been on cyclizine for about 4 months now and it’s helped me a lot. I felt totally drowsy for the first 24 hours, bit less the next day, and since then have had no drowsiness from them. The key is to take it consistently so that it’s always in your system and you retain your resistance to the drowsiness. It helped reduced my nausea and sickness a lot, but if it doesn’t work for you after 2-3 days go back and ask to try the next line drug.

Bonus - it’s also an antihistamine so has helped with hayfever!
